life and career

Karsten Greve was born in Dahme / Mark . He spent his school days in Berlin and Siegen and studied law and art history at the University of Cologne , the University of Lausanne and the University of Geneva . As a student he began his own art collection set up and acquired his first Cy Twombly painting in 1966. At the age of 23 he had works by Cy Twombly , Joseph Beuys , Lucio Fontana , Yves Klein, Willem de Kooning , Joseph Cornell , and Jannis Kounellis purchased . Together with Rolf Möllenhof (* 1939, Chemnitz), he ran the Möllenhof / Greve gallery in 1970. In 1972 he became the sole owner of the Karsten Greve gallery, which at that time was still located in the Cologne Lindenstrasse gallery. He opened the gallery with a solo exhibition dedicated to the artist Yves Klein , the focus of which was on the Anthropometry series of works. Greve opened a second gallery in Paris in 1989, a third gallery in Milan in 1994 (closed in 2002) and a fourth location in St.Moritz in 1999.

Karsten Greve collects design furniture by Robert Mallet-Stevens , Le Corbusier and Pierre Chareau . He acquired part of the rue Mallet-Stevens Hôtel Martel. He is married and has three children.

Importance in the art world

Karsten Greve was one of the first gallery owners to open an exhibition space in the Marais district of Paris in the 1980s. He was the first gallery owner to open a gallery in St.Moritz.

During his 40-year career as an art dealer, Karsten Greve contributed significantly to the international recognition of artists such as  Louise Bourgeois - as one of the first to exhibit her in Europe - John Chamberlain , Lucio Fontana , Jannis Kounellis , Piero Manzoni and Cy Twombly . Up to two-thirds of the works that can be found on the market were originally sold by him. His close friendship with the artists served as the basis for the gallery program, which is determined by the international post-war avant-garde.

Karsten Greve about his first meeting with Cy Twombly: "It was 1969. I was 23 and had just opened a gallery in Cologne. He was living in Rome, in a 16th-century palace that had no names on the door. I eventually figured out where he lived. I went to his apartment a couple of times and rang the bell but he never answered. Eventually, he heard from others that a crazy young German wanted to meet him and he let me in. "

Greve has gained widespread recognition for its curated trade fair presentations and museum exhibition quality as well as for its ability to recognize the relevance of artists and their oeuvre before they become internationally known. At the 1996 Sao Paulo Biennale, Karsten Greve curated a solo exhibition dedicated to Cy Twombly. From 1997 to 2003 he was chairman of the Art Cologne admissions committee. He was also a member of the Art Basel Selection Committee and the FIAC jury.

Greve is the holder of the Ordine al Merito della Rebubblica Italiana (Cavaliere Ufficiale), which he was awarded in December 1998.

philanthropy

Karsten Greve supports the Jewish National Fund (קרן קימת לישראל, Keren Kayemet LeYisrael ) in its environmental protection and reforestation projects. In 2013 it became known that Karsten Greve donated one million euros for the extension of the planned new German Romantic Museum in Frankfurt am Main after the city of Frankfurt surprisingly dropped out of the group of donors; Since then, it has been the locomotive of the donation initiative for the construction of the literature museum, which is expected to open in 2018. In 2015 he participated in the foundation of the sculpture Usagi Kannon by Leiko Ikemura at the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne. Karsten Greve donated the Lucio Fontana sculpture Natura to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and Pierre Chareau Möbel to the Museum of Applied Arts in Cologne.
