Nathan Rees (born February 12, 1968 in Sydney , New South Wales ) is an Australian politician of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), who was Prime Minister of New South Wales between 2008 and 2009 .

Life

Rees joined the union after graduating from school and was secretary of the Municipal and Shire Employees Union before becoming an advisor to several New South Wales ministers of labor.

His political career began when he was elected as a candidate for the ALP in March 2007 in the constituency of Toongabbie as a member of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales . Shortly thereafter, Prime Minister Morris Iemma appointed him Minister for Water Utilities and Emergency Services, and in 2008 he took over the post of Minister for Water, which had emerged from the previous Ministry of Water Services.

Prime Minister Iemma announced a cabinet reshuffle in September 2008, but then resigned after opposition from his own party. Thereupon Rees was elected chairman of the ALP and took over the office of Prime Minister of New South Wales on September 5, 2008 after less than two years of parliamentary membership. He was also Minister for the Arts during his tenure and Minister for the Central Coast region for some time in 2009.

However, in December 2009 he was voted out of office by his own party committee with 43 to 25, so that on December 4, 2009, the previous Minister Kristina Keneally became the new Prime Minister.
