It was founded in 1913, the museum building was completed in 1916. The collection of the museum includes more than 40,000 exhibits. The focus of the collection is on the pre-Columbian period , the art of Asia and the European Middle Ages (including pieces from the Welf Treasure ).

In 2019 it was announced that 30,000 high-quality and free digital images from the museum's collection will be released into the public domain ( Creative Commons License CC0) and made available via an interface. The CC0 license allows the images to be used without any restrictions. The director of the museum, William M. Griswold, commented on this step: Open Access with Creative Commons will provide countless new opportunities to engage with works of art in our collection. With this move, we have transformed not only access to the CMA's collection, but also its usability - inside as well as outside the walls of our museum. With this publishing strategy, the Cleveland Museum of Art is following role models such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago .
