Paul Nauen (born December 6, 1859 in Hamburg , † 1932 ) was a German painter .

Life

Paul Nauen was the son of a businessman and graduated from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1878 . From the winter semester of 1878 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Nauen later taught at a private school in Munich with Friedrich Fehr and Ludwig Schmid-Reutte . There he gathered a group of more than thirty students around him, which aroused astonishment among the artist's youth. His students included Anna Beyer , Mathilde Block , Olga Boznańska , Hans Beat Wieland , Rudolf Yelin the Elder , Marie Stein-Ranke , Hans Schadow, Robert Breyer , Ernst Kreidolf , Hermann Kauffmann the Younger , Elbridge Burbank and Marianne Rusche .

At the end of the 1880s, Nauen moved to Düsseldorf . "Here he has opened his workshop in the so-called wonder building , which had to help out the academy after the fire and represents a kind of rat king of studios, and is already giving, [...], nine students lessons in painting and life drawing." ( Kunstchronik : Wochenzeitschrift für Arts and Crafts, No. 18, March 6, 1889)

In 1906 Nauen stayed in the USA, including New York and Lenox. There he portrayed several members of the Colgate family. The New York Times reported on January 7, 1906 that Nauen had received a gold medal in Vienna for a woman's portrait and was honored with a dinner in the USA. During this stay, Nauen was a guest of Carl Weidner (1865–1906).

In the National Museum in Kraków there is a portrait of Paul Nauen, which Olga Boznańska painted in 1893, and a portrait of Olga Boznańska, which Paul Nauen painted in the same year.

In 1892 Nauen was represented in a collective exhibition in Düsseldorf , he also took part in a collective exhibition in Bremen and in Berlin in 1891. A portrait of Paul Nauen was shown in The Art of Our Time from 1904.
