Hans Schadow
Hans Schadow (born January 8, 1862 in Berlin , † October 16, 1924 Bad Driburg , Westphalia ) was a German portrait painter .
Life
Schadow, great-great-nephew of Johann Gottfried Schadow , was the second child of the banker and private scholar Gustav Schadow and Anna Marie Therese Philipp. He was the nephew and student of Reinhold Begas , who in turn was the godchild of Johann Gottfried Schadow. He started studying at the Berlin Art Academy in 1879 at the age of 17 . He then studied from 1884 at the Academy in Munich with Bruno Piglhein , Franz von Lenbach , Johann Herterich and Paul Nauen . Now he moved abroad and from 1890 he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris with Tony Robert-Fleury and William Adolphe Bouguereau . After a short time he went to Dordrecht in Holland , from there to London in 1891 , where he stayed until 1896. He then lived in Spain , Sweden , Russia and Turkey for about a year , and from 1907 in Egypt . In between he regularly visited Berlin, Munich and Venice to take part in exhibitions.
In 1914 he volunteered for the First World War and was initially stationed in Flanders . In 1915 he took part in the Polish campaign from Galicia to the peace treaty of Brest-Litovsk , as well as in the winter campaign in the Serbian highlands. In 1916 he fought in the Battle of Verdun . In 1916 he was promoted to major in the Landwehr, 1st Guard, Field Artillery Regiment. In 1918 he fell ill and was treated in the hospitals in Charleville and Nauheim.
In 1921 he was appointed professor at the Dresden Art Academy .
At the age of 62, Schadow died of flu on October 16, 1924.

Works (selection)
Schadow began painting portraits at a young age . His representations are realistic. In 1903 he portrayed Pope Leo XIII. in the Vatican, later also Pope Pius X. In addition to portraits, he also painted landscapes.
