Hans-Jürgen Graf Blumenthal (born February 23, 1907 in Potsdam ; † October 13, 1944 in Berlin-Plötzensee ) was a German officer and resistance fighter in the attack on July 20, 1944 .
Life
He was a member of the Brandenburg noble family Blumenthal . Since his school days in Potsdam, Blumenthal had been friends with Wilhelm von Prussia , the eldest son of the Crown Prince. He studied law and was involved in the Stahlhelmbund during his studies . After the steel helmet was brought into line, Blumenthal joined an opposition circle around Theodor Duesterberg .
After graduating, he became a lieutenant in an infantry regiment of the Wehrmacht and, after initial enthusiasm, distanced himself more and more from National Socialism . In 1938 he took part in planning a coup in the event of a war against Czechoslovakia . Due to the Munich Agreement , the start of the war was postponed for the time being and the putsch never took place.
During the Second World War , he initially served as a first lieutenant , but due to a serious wound he was unfit for service at the front and performed his service in the General Army Office of the Army High Command . There he met Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg and took part in planning the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944.
After the attack failed, von Blumenthal was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death by the People's Court . On October 13, 1944, he was executed in Plötzensee prison.
