Dieter Krüger (historian)

Dieter Krüger (born February 8, 1953 in Konstanz ) is a German contemporary historian and archivist . He worked at the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw) and teaches contemporary history as an adjunct professor at the University of Potsdam .

Life

Krüger studied history , political science , education and philosophy at the Philipps University of Marburg from 1972 to 1981 and from 1981 to 1984 as a scholarship holder at the European University Institute in Florence. In 1977 he passed the first state examination for higher education. It was in 1981 when Gerd Hardach and Theo Schiller at the Department of History at the University of Marburg with a study of the social sciences in the empire to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1984 to 1986 he was State Archives referendar in Detmold. In 1986 he passed the archival state examination. From 1987 to 1993 he was head of department at the military archive department of the federal archive in Freiburg im Breisgau . There he was responsible for taking over, listing and using files of the Bundeswehr. In 1993/94 he was head of the Federal Archives Interim Archive in Dahlwitz-Hoppegarten . For the Federal Archives , he led 1994 to 1996 the transfer of the former Berlin Document Center in the Federal Archives. Initial fears of American historians and associations that the transition would go hand in hand with poorer access to personal documents from the Third Reich did not come true. In 1997, Krüger switched to the so-called Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Potsdam as a research assistant . As a project manager, he was responsible for the history of the North Atlantic Alliance and the Warsaw Treaty Organization and was in charge of the series “Beginnings and Development of the Atlantic Alliance” of the former MGFA. Since 2014 he has headed the Deployment Department of the ZMSBw, which is responsible for the history of the Bundeswehr's foreign missions, their social science support, their documentation and the latest military history. Most recently, he held the title of Senior Scientific Director. He retired in October 2018.

After teaching positions (since 2005) at the Universities of Potsdam, Halle and Munich (Bundeswehr) , he completed his habilitation in contemporary history with a study on European integration at the University of Halle and became a private lecturer at the Institute for History there. Since his re- qualification he has been teaching at the professorship for military history / cultural history of violence ( Sönke Neitzel , formerly Bernhard R. Kroener ) at the Historical Institute of the University of Potsdam.

He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Point Alpha Foundation and a member of the Association of Historians in Germany .

Krüger published studies on the history of social science and social policy in the late Empire, the insurance and banking system after 1945, the rearmament of West Germany and the German secret services after 1945, European integration , the nuclear strategy , the North Atlantic Alliance and the Warsaw Treaty Organization, history and practice archiving and archiving law.
