Bernhard R. Kroener (born February 24, 1948 in Vallendar ) is a German military historian .

Bernhard R. Kroener was born in Vallendar near Koblenz in 1948 as the third son of Rhineland-Silesian parents. His father was an officer in World War II and later a ministerial director in the Federal Ministry of Defense . From 1952 he spent his childhood and youth in Bonn. From 1968 he did an 18-month military service in the Bundeswehr. Kroener studied modern history, classical archeology and political science at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and at the University of Sorbonne . In Paris he was strongly influenced by the military historian André Corvisier . Through Corvisier, he put the focus on military history in the future. In 1977 he was with Stephan Skalweit in Bonn with the work Les routes et les étapes. Supplying the French armies in northeastern France (1635–1661). A contribution to the administrative history of the Ancien Régime to the Dr. phil. PhD. He received further support from his Bonn teacher Konrad Repgen , who pushed for the work to be included in the series of publications of the Association for Research into Modern History . From 1978 Kroener worked as a research assistant at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) and from 1984 at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . Since 1985 he has been teaching regularly in Freiburg. His habilitation in modern and modern history, in particular military history, took place there in 1990 on the problems of personal armaments of the Third Reich .

Kroener taught from 1997 to 2013 as professor for military history / cultural history of violence at the Historical Institute of the University of Potsdam ; his successor was Sönke Neitzel . He was the first to hold a chair for military history at a university in Germany. From 2004 to 2010, Kroener was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and thus worked in this role longer than any of his predecessors. He played a key role in shaping the “Military Studies” master’s course established at the University of Potsdam in 2007. His academic students include Ralf Pröve , Rüdiger Bergien , Matthias Rogg , Jens Westemeier , Christian Th. Müller , Ludger Tewes , John Zimmermann and Stephan Huck .

Kroener's main research interests are the relationship between the military and society in the early modern period and the Thirty Years' War (15th to 17th centuries), the Prussian social history of the military in the 18th century, the role of the military in politics and society in the 19th century and phenomena of Population and war in the 20th century. From 1995 to 2004, Kroener was the first chairman of the working group for the military and society in the early modern period . From 2010 he was a German representative on the board of the International Commission for Military History .

Another focus is on museum work. Kroener played a key role in setting up the Museum of the Thirty Years War in Wittstock and in the redesign of the Military History Museum in Dresden. He is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Museum of the Thirty Years War (chair).

Kroener is a member of the Brandenburg Historical Commission and the Prussian Historical Commission . He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Werner Hahlweg Prize for Military History and Defense Sciences . Kroener is co-editor of the series War in History at Verlag Ferdinand Schöningh and Herrschaft und Sozial System at Lit Verlag and the magazine for military history . Kroener is co-author of the complete works Das Deutsche Reich and the Second World War and the Encyclopedia of German History . He also wrote the lexicon articles on Alessandro Maffei and Baltasar von Marradas in the New German Biography (NDB) and worked on the German Biographical Encyclopedia and the Dictionnaire d'art et d'histoire militaires .
