Peter Baumgart

Peter Baumgart (born September 7, 1931 in Berlin ) is a German historian .

Peter Baumgart went to the Clausewitz School and later to the Schillergymnasium in Berlin, before studying history , English , philosophy and Latin at the Free University of Berlin from 1949 . He received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin in 1956 with a thesis on Zinzendorf's historical thinking , supervised by Carl Hinrichs . He was Hinrichs' scientific assistant at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute and completed his habilitation in 1964 at the former Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel University of Helmstedt . The habilitation thesis remained unpublished. In 1964 he became a private lecturer, later a university lecturer at the Philosophical Faculty of the Free University of Berlin. From 1967, until his retirement, Baumgart taught as a full professor of modern history at the University of Würzburg . He became chairman of the commission for the history of the Bavarian Julius Maximilians University and head of the university archive .

His main research interests are the educational and university history of the early modern period and the history of Prussia and its provinces. He is considered an expert on (Brandenburg-) Prussian statehood and culture. He wrote a portrait of the " Soldier King " in the anthology about Prussia's rulers.

On the occasion of his 75th birthday, the numerous contributions on the history of universities in the denominational age that were published between 1961 and 1994 were published collectively.

He is a member of the executive board of the Prussian Historical Commission and the Historical Commission for Silesia .
