The Museum of the Thirty Years 'War is located in Wittstock an der Dosse in the seven-story tower of the late medieval Old Bishop's Castle , which was one of the scenes of the Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648). The museum was opened on September 24, 1998, after three years of restoration and reconstruction of the castle complex, as the first of its kind in Europe. The military historians Bernhard R. Kroener and Matthias Rogg contributed to the construction. Local researcher Wolfgang Dost became the first museum director . The facility also includes the Ostprignitz Museum , a local museum of the city of Wittstock and the Ostprignitz region in Brandenburg, which is set up in the mayor's house of the castle .

The Museum of the Thirty Years War documents the causes, the course, the immediate results and consequences as well as the aftermath of the Thirty Years War. The exhibition is divided into seven thematic levels - "Myths and truths", "The causes of war", "Joy of life and courage", "Life in the army", "Technology and people in war", "The battle" and " The long-awaited peace ”.

Due to the battle of Wittstock , from which Sweden's troops emerged victorious in 1636, the museum, together with the town of Wittstock, is part of the Schwedenstrasse , a holiday route with a cultural and historical theme.

Members of the scientific advisory board were or are, among others, Bernhard R. Kroener, Johannes Burkhardt , Herbert Langer , Manfried Rauchsteiner , Lothar Höbelt , Jan Lindegren and Erik Norberg .
