Johannes Burkhardt (born February 24, 1943 in Dresden ) is a German historian .

Johannes Burkhardt studied history, German and philosophy at the universities of Hamburg and Tübingen . In 1971 he received his doctorate in Tübingen under Ernst Walter Zeeden with a study on the origins of the calculation of the century that is still widely received today. From 1973 to 1974 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Historical Behavioral Research in Stuttgart . From 1978 to 1986 Burkhardt was a research assistant or academic senior counselor at the University of Eichstätt . There he received his habilitation in modern and recent history in 1984 with a thesis on the Seven Years War and papal diplomacy. Burkhardt was a substitute professor in Bielefeld (1987/88) and Bochum (1989/90).

In 1991 Burkhardt succeeded Wolfgang Reinhard at the University of Augsburg , where he taught as a full professor of early modern history until his retirement in 2008 . Since 1991 he has been a member of the board of directors of the Institute for European Cultural History and director of the Fugger Archives in Dillingen . From 1991 to 1995 he was managing director of the Institute for European Cultural History at the University of Augsburg and has been a member of the Swabian Research Association since 1993 . Burkhardt also became a member of the scientific advisory board of the Museum of the Thirty Years War in Wittstock an der Dosse .

With publications on the Thirty Years' War (1992) and the Reformation Century (2002), Burkhardt researched important events of the early modern period. Burkhardt interpreted the Thirty Years War as a "war of state formation". The thesis was widely received. Axel Gotthard decidedly rejected it . For the latest edition of the classic handbook of German history, the Gebhardt , Burkhardt wrote the volume on the Holy Roman Empire between 1648 and 1763. In 2009 he published a concise account of German history in the early modern period.
