Detail of the steel lamella construction

The boathouse in Leopoldshafen is a listed boathouse with a pointed arched roof in the Ziebigk district of the city of Dessau-Roßlau . The steel lamellar construction used in the construction was developed by Junkers -Stahlbau around 1920 and patented in 1928. With this construction, which was also used in aircraft wing construction, large halls could be spanned.

The building was erected in May 1930 on the headland at Leopoldshafen at Elbe kilometer 261.3. The lamellar construction was prefabricated in the Junkers Kaloriferwerk. The assembly was completed by a fitter and three apprentices in just fourteen days.

The supporting structure stands on concrete piles, has an almost square floor plan and is provided with wooden formwork. The roof skin was originally probably formed by the corrugated Junkers special panels made of light metal. The ground floor basement is used to store boats and houses a small workshop. On the lower level of the building there are about 80 other paddle boats of all kinds on shelves as well as sanitary rooms with showers. The upper level houses the club room and changing facilities with lockers . Some of the lockers are from the Junkers era. These are provided with doors made of corrugated sheet metal, which is partially stiffened with wooden strips.

Who financed the boathouse is unknown. It is obvious, however, that it was the Junkers works, as the paddlers were initially organized in a kind of company sports community before the Junkers Paddelgemeinschaft Dessau eV was founded as an independent association on September 15, 1930.

The boathouse was damaged in the last days of the war in 1945, but could soon be used again after the repair. Today the boathouse is used by the Junkers paddling community in Dessau .

On June 8, 2013, the Elbe flooded the boathouse for the first time . However, it was possible to get the boats to safety in good time. Significant damage was caused to the house itself, but the historical structure remained largely unaffected.
