Working group on the military and society in the early modern period

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Working Group Military and Society in the Early Modern Age, founded in 1995 . V . (AMG) researches the historical, economic, social and cultural role of the military in the early modern period (approx. 1500–1800).

Development and goals

The aim of the association is to comprehensively research the role of the military in society. He wants to make a contribution not only to military history in the narrower sense, but also to the history of the early modern period as a whole. The association assumes that so far the relationship between the military and society has been interpreted too one-sidedly. The militarization thesis such as Otto Büschrepresented is therefore rejected. Instead of the previous concept of the military and society, the focus is more on the question of the military in society. The association sees itself as part of the "new military history" that has emerged since the 1990s, with a broad methodological, theoretical and thematic spectrum. In addition to the historical peace research working group and the military history working group , each with a different focus, it is one of the most important associations in this research area.

The association emerged from a working group at the German Historians' Day in 1996. The Potsdam military historians Ralf Pröve and Bernhard R. Kroener are the founders of the association, which currently has around 140 international members - including numerous well-known scientists. These come from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and various European and non-European countries. The association holds a general meeting every two years as part of the Historians' Day. In the intervening years, a conference takes place, each dedicated to a specific issue.

The AMG publishes the journal of the same name, which appears twice a year. Relevant projects are presented there. There are also articles and reviews. In addition, the association publishes a series of publications on domination and social systems in the early modern period . In 2011, the AMG awarded the Hannelore Otto Prize for outstanding final degree theses (MA, state examination, master’s) in the field of military history for the first time; the winners were Steffen Leins, Sune Erik Schlitte and Karsten Süß.
