Ralf Pröve

Ralf Pröve (born September 4, 1960 in Celle ) is a German historian who works in social history and cultural anthropology with a focus on the early modern period and the 19th century. Since 2005 he has been an adjunct professor for modern and contemporary history at the University of Potsdam .

Life

Göttingen and Berlin years

From 1982 to 1988 , Pröve studied history , German , pedagogy and pedagogical psychology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1988 he worked as a research assistant there at the Seminar for Medieval and Modern History. In 1992 he was with Hermann Wellenreuther with the dissertation standing army and urban society in the 18th century. Göttingen and its military population 1713–1756 as Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1992 to 1998 he was a research assistant to Hartmut Harnisch at the Institute for History at the Humboldt University in Berlin . During this time (1996) he and the Potsdam military historian Bernhard R. Kroener founded the Working Group on the Military and Society in the Early Modern Age (AMG) at the German Historians' Day in Munich . From 2004 to 2013 he was its chairman (since 2013 Marian Füssel ). In 1998 he completed his habilitation at the Philosophical Faculty I of the HU Berlin with the thesis Urban Republicanism and the 'Power of the People'. Civil order formations and communal models of political participation . This was examined by the historians Wolfgang Hardtwig , Dieter Langewiesche and Heinz Schilling . He then worked as a private lecturer at the HU Berlin and the University of Potsdam . In 1999 he was project manager at the Research Institute for the History of Prussia in Berlin. He took on further historical research directors at the University of Potsdam ( cultural and everyday history of Pariser Platz in Berlin, 1730–1990 ) and at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (subject inventory of Brandenburg-Prussian military history ). In 2004 he completed his habilitation at the University of Potsdam.

Early Potsdam years

Since 2005 he has been an adjunct professor for modern and contemporary history at the Historical Institute of the University of Potsdam. Until 2015 he was assigned to the professorship “Military History and Cultural History of Violence” until he was entrusted with the field of social history . At the historical institute of the University of Potsdam he performed various tasks, including a. he was managing director from 2009 to 2010.

From 2005 to 2007 he was responsible for the conception, development and organization of the previously innovative master’s degree in Military Studies - Military History / Military Sociology at the University of Potsdam.

The aim of the master’s course was to enable students to recognize, assess, present and apply military-historical and military-sociological relationships in different areas. You should have specialist skills in the analysis of the internal military system in the past and present as well as in the scientific reconstruction of the interactions between the military, state, society, economy and culture. At the same time, they should have in-depth knowledge of the conditions, structures and dynamics of armed conflicts.

More recent years in Potsdam

From 2009 to 2010 Ralf Pröve was responsible for the conception, development and organization of the master’s course in Cultural Encounter Spaces in the Early Modern Age at the University of Potsdam.

The interdisciplinary master’s course in Cultural Encounter Spaces of the Early Modern Era, for which the Early Modern Age Center Potsdam is responsible, ties in with the basic categories of culture, space and encounters, which are of central importance in the current research discussion on the early modern period and are to be regarded as key concepts in cultural studies. Knowledge of the early modern era is deepened and interdisciplinary research methods in the fields of history, literature, language, art and philosophy are taught.

From 2009 to 2015 he was spokesman for the Early Modern Age Center Potsdam. He was succeeded by Ivan D'Aprile .

Ralf Pröve began to deal with cultural anthropological and social constructivist approaches in the 2010s. These quickly found their way into his newer seminars, research and support topics.

His thematic focuses include:

Since 2015 he has been responsible for the social history department of the Historical Institute of the University of Potsdam.

Pröve published several books and published articles in u. a. Journal for Historical Science (ZfG), Journal for Historical Research (ZHF), Historical Journal (HZ) and Revue historique des armées (RHA). In addition, he is co-editor of the periodical military and society in the early modern period of the AMG. He has authored over 200 reviews in magazines and is the author of lexicon articles for the Encyclopedia of Modern Times . Pröve is a member of the Brandenburg Historical Commission (BrHiKo).
