Encyclopedia of Modern Times

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Encyclopedia of Modern Times is a specialist reference work in 16 volumes that describes 400 years of history from 1450 to 1850 in around 4000 articles.

It was published by the Institute for Cultural Studies Essen and Friedrich Jaeger . The Encyclopedia of Modern Times was published from May 2005 to October 2012 by the JB Metzler publishing house in Stuttgart . The work interprets the time from the end of the Middle Ages through the Early Modern Age and the Revolutionary Modern Age (until around 1850) as a continuous development. The articles are based on the current state of research at the time of writing. Thematically, the encyclopedia includes political, cultural, economic, social, philosophical, religious and legal history, among others. The articles include both overview and special individual topics, but not personal articles. In this context, the perspective is not limited to Europe, but also takes into account the respective global contexts of the early modern period.

An English-language revision is published by Brill under the title Encyclopedia of Early Modern History , edited by Graeme Dunphy .
