The Zeitschrift für Geschichtswwissenschaft (ZfG) is a monthly German-language historical specialist journal .

history

The ZfG was founded in East Berlin in 1953 . Until 1989 it was the journalistic flagship of GDR history. In the GDR, historical studies held a "central political and ideologically significant position". It should educate the people in East Germany “in the spirit of socialist patriotism and proletarian internationalism” and serve the “development of their own national consciousness”. Accordingly, the ZfG had a strictly Marxist-Leninist orientation, which left no room for deviations from the respective party line of the SED .

With the turnaround and the reunification, the magazine changed fundamentally. It has been published by the Berlin Metropol Verlag since 1993 . A dogmatic historiography in the service of a non-scientifically established party line was a thing of the past. Instead, the ZfG defined itself as a pluralistic journal that wanted to act as a mediator between East German and West German historical studies. In this way, the "marginalized East German historians and their international interlocutors ... a forum" should be reserved. In the course of this reorientation, the ZfG changed its external appearance. The green cover from GDR times has been replaced by covers with constantly changing colors.

Thematic focus

Even before the fall of the Wall, the focus was on studies of the modern and the most recent. Even after 1995, recent German history is the focus of interest. The preparation of the time of National Socialism and the research into the Holocaust and its consequences are of great importance. On the other hand, topics from antiquity and medieval studies are treated less often in the journal. The proportion of non-German historians among the authors is relatively low, despite an attempt to open them to international topics.

Editor and editor

The editors were almost completely replaced in a transitional phase from 1990 to 1994. The current group of editors consists of Wolfgang Benz , Michael Borgolte , Peter Steinbach , Ludmila Thomas and Benjamin Ziemann . The editorial work takes place in the Telefunken skyscraper of the TU Berlin , at the headquarters of the Center for Research on Antisemitism , of which Wolfgang Benz was director until 2011. The editing is in the hands of Friedrich Veitl (responsible), Angelika Königseder, Detlev Kraack and Swen Steinberg.
