Live and act

Prokop, a native of the Sudetenland , grew up in Mecklenburg and obtained the Abitur in Neubrandenburg in 1958. He then studied history and German at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the State University in Leningrad from 1958 to 1963 . On June 26, 1967, he received his doctorate on the subject of the interrelationship between the bourgeois university reform efforts and the state monopoly reorganization measures in the West German higher education system .

As a lecturer in the 1970s, he dealt with topics relating to German history and undertook initial research into the history of the GDR . From 1979 he held a position as a university lecturer at Humboldt University. From 1983 to 1996 he taught as a professor of contemporary history at the Berlin Humboldt University.

Since the 1980s, Prokop turned to a new research topic, the social history of the intelligentsia in the GDR.

Prokop received a notice of termination on December 31, 1991 for “reasons of need” and “lack of personal aptitude”. He was accused of having been involved in exclusion proceedings ("relegations") against students as a section head. Prokop won the labor court case in the first instance, the appeal was rejected by the regional labor court. Therefore, he became a full professor again against the will of the senator and university president. In 1994 the university withdrew the allegations in a settlement.

After 1996 he became a project manager at the research center of the Association for Applied Conflict Research .

From 2006 to 2012, Prokop headed the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Brandenburg as chairman of the board .
