Günter Benser (born January 12, 1931 in Heidenau ) is a German Marxist historian .

Benser comes from a working-class family that was very involved in the Heidenau amateur theater , the “Heidenau Volksbühne”. He completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk in the Elbe Valley Works , then attended the workers and farmers faculty and then studied history in Leipzig . He worked as a research assistant and professor at the Institute for Marxism-Leninism at the Central Committee of the SED (IML), most recently as deputy head of department and member of the Council for Historical Studies and the National Committee of Historians of the GDR . Among other things, Benser is a national prize winner of the GDR . In 1989, when the IML was transformed into the Institute for the History of the Labor Movement (IfGA), he was elected almost unanimously as its director until the institute was dissolved in 1992.

Benser published articles in particular on the history of the SED, the GDR and communism as well as the dramaturgical association of the Volksbühne Heidenau. His works before 1989 were part of the standard history literature in the GDR and essentially established the SED's self-understanding of history. Later, Benser also dealt with his own work. Benser is a member of the Leibniz Society .
