Peter Bender

Peter Bender (born June 16, 1923 in Berlin ; † October 11, 2008 there ) was a German ancient historian and journalist . According to Spiegel , he was considered the journalistic pioneer of Willy Brandt's Ostpolitik .

Life

Peter Bender passed his Abitur in 1941 at the Gymnasium in Berlin-Friedenau ( Egon Bahr was one of his classmates ) and, after studying ancient history, became a Dr. phil. PhD .

Since 1954 he worked as a journalist, u. a. as an editor at the SFB . From 1961 to 1970 he was editor and commentator at WDR , from 1970 to 1988 Berlin correspondent for WDR . From 1973 to 1975 ARD correspondent (radio) in Warsaw . Since 1963 he has also been the author of Die Zeit , since 1966 also of Merkur and the magazine The Month . In 1968/1969 he was also a Senior Assistant at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

In the radio and in the press he made a name for himself in assessing the German-German relationship and by commenting on German Ostpolitik, but was also discussed controversially .
