The Friedrich-Bergius-Schule is an integrated secondary school in the Berlin district of Friedenau in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district . It is named after the chemist Friedrich Bergius . The representative and historicizing building has echoes of the beginning of modernism as well as reminiscences of the Renaissance and is richly decorated with sculptures . Despite some damage in World War II , essential equipment details have been preserved. The school is the oldest educational institution in Friedenau and is listed as a memorial .

location

The school is located on the property at Perelsplatz (formerly Maybachplatz ) 1–9, Handjerystraße 95-97 and Lauterstraße 41/42, not far from the S-Bahn and U-Bahn station Bundesplatz and the U-Bahn station Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz . The school building forms a complete system with the neighboring school principal's house.

history

The former Maybachplatz , today: Perelsplatz , with the school in 1908

On April 20, 1901, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of what was then the Friedenau grammar school, built in the neo-baroque style, based on plans by the architects Paul Engelmann and Erich Blunck . The architect Johannes Duntz was in charge of construction. After two years of construction, the school was inaugurated on April 18, 1903.

architecture

The four-storey building has an L-shaped floor plan, so that the angular school building surrounds the schoolyard to the north. The corner of Perelsplatz and Handjerystraße is emphasized by a mighty tower. The corner tower is crowned by four shield gables above the top floor of the tower, an octagonal tower tower above it (with a lookout and clocks on all four sides) and a corresponding helmet. The Friedenau coat of arms with the Angel of Peace is executed as a relief below the tower.

The four-storey wings of the school building are closed in the north and east by transverse structures that are one storey higher and have high mansard roofs . The main entrance is in the east wing on Perelsplatz, its columned portal with a small flight of stairs and a vaulted roof is richly decorated with sculptures: On the central pillar of the entrance, St. Michael is depicted as a dragon slayer. Various sayings adorn the front of the facade and the lintel of the portal, for example “Like the seed so the harvest” or “No master has fallen from heaven”.

Main portal with the inscription "As the seed, so the harvest"

In the east wing, in addition to the hall with the large main staircase, the administration rooms are located on the south side and the two-storey auditorium with stage in the transverse building . The location of the spacious auditorium can be recognized from the outside by the high windows on the right-hand side of the entrance front. The school building forms a complete facility with the neighboring former school principal's house (currently a kindergarten) and the adjoining old gym from 1960 as well as the green playground and the large sports field. The gym in the north on Handjerystraße, which was built at the same time as the school, was destroyed in the Second World War. A new sports hall was built on part of the school yard in the 1990s.

In the opposite Handjerystraße 2, during the Berlin Airlift , which was set up on the occasion of the Berlin blockade in 1948/1949, a “ cherry bomber ” crashed on July 25, 1948 and severely damaged the building. The roof of the school was also affected. A plaque on the house at Handjerystraße 2 commemorates the two US pilots who were killed at the time. The grammar school was closed because of the war and post-war consequences. The successor was the Friedrich-Bergius-Oberschule in 1958, which took over the building and was a secondary school until 2010 .

A high stele in the northern front garden shows the relief portrait of Martin Luther with the verse " A strong castle is our God " and on the back the portrait of Otto von Bismarck with his motto "In Trinitate Robur" ("In the trinity there is power").

The building is listed in the Berlin monument list under object number 09066263 .

Others

In 2008 the school was used as the location for the television film 1-0 for happiness and in 2009 for the first season of the real-time adventure series Alone Against Time , which was broadcast on KI.KA. In addition, scenes were filmed for the ZDF television series Ku'damm 59 in 2017 , in which the school can be seen as a courthouse.

The school is seen as an example of a successful fight against truancy .

School goals

The educational work of the school is based on the following motto:

"Demand performance - promote social behavior - achieve employability"

At the end of the 10th grade, the pupils of the Friedrich-Bergius-Schule acquire the intermediate educational qualification (formerly “Realschul qualification ” or “Mittlere Reife”) through a final examination , which entitles them to attend the upper school level with a corresponding grade .

Intensive cooperation between the Friedrich Bergius School and numerous training companies, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK Berlin), secondary schools and the “Job coaching” project financed by the European Union make it easier for graduates to start their careers.
