The Solo Small Engines GmbH (own spellings: SOLO, solo) is a German manufacturer of small and aircraft engines , plant and blowers and power cutters Württemberg Baden-headquartered in Sindelfingen-Maichingen .

The off-road, six-wheeled floating car Solo 750 was produced from 1973 to 1980 . The production of mopeds was stopped in 1998.

The brand name “Solo” goes back to the fact that the backpack sprayer for pesticides in viticulture was the first to allow a single person to work independently from 1951, whereas previously a heavy stationary motor pump required numerous helpers to handle the long hose.

While more than 1,200 people were employed during the moped boom in the 1970s, the number of employees in 2004 was around 330. In 1998 about 100 million  DM were turned over .

In August 2006 170 people were employed. The company's capital amounted to 5.113 million euros, the turnover in the 2005/2006 financial year was 48.5 million euros. Solo is an independent family company. The managing directors are Wolfgang Emmerich (technology) and Andreas Emmerich (finance), brothers of the director Roland Emmerich . The fiscal year begins on August 1st.

At the beginning of 2014 it was announced that AL-KO Kober would take over a large part of Solo Kleinmotoren GmbH and sell it under the solo by AL-KO brand . This includes chainsaws, brushcutters, lawn mowers, etc. Only the product fields of crop protection equipment and cut-off machines remained with SOLO. About 65 employees were affected by layoffs or takeover bids, as these products are no longer produced in Sindelfingen, but in China and Austria under the direction of ALKO.

history

  • Founded on January 10, 1948 as a manufacturer of small two-stroke engines in Maichingen near Sindelfingen. The first areas of application were lawn mowers, pumps and mopeds. The company founders are Hans and Heinz Emmerich.
  • In the 1950s, the product range was expanded to include portable motor dusters, sprayers, other devices (tillers) and finally chain saws. Solo was the first manufacturer of a direct drive chainsaw in Europe.
  • In the 1960s expansion of business activities with branches in Daun, Bologna, France and Belgium, among others.
  • 1957/1958 achieved a great sales success with over 20,000 solo tillers sold .
  • In 1958, Solo introduced the first direct drive chainsaw, the Solo Rex.
  • from 1970 a new product line of mopeds and outboard motors are introduced. An amphibious 'all-terrain vehicle' with six fully powered wheels, the Solo 750 , will also be presented.
  • 1972: The “Solo Electra” moped ( Solo 720 ) with a 500 W electric motor and two batteries with 12 V / 40 Ah is presented and built in series.
  • 1978: Start of production of the Mokicks Solo MK 40 .
  • From 1980, increased use of plastic as a housing material. First manufacturer of a completely plastic crankcase for a two-stroke engine . Steady growth, especially in the chain saw sector.
  • Continuous growth in the 1990s, involvement in the development of Stirling engines .
  • From 2000, the Stirling cogeneration unit is ready for series production, and Solo forest accessories are introduced.
  • 2003 Federal Prize for the Solo Stirling 161 microCHP module
  • On March 21, 2006, Solo-Stirling was filed for bankruptcy .
  • On February 20, 2014, the company announced the sale of the garden and forestry equipment division to AL-KO Kober SE . In the future, the company will concentrate on crop protection equipment and cut-off machines

Solo is now one of the last German producers of its own two-stroke engine (alongside Dolmar from Hamburg , Stihl from Waiblingen-Neustadt , AS-Motor from Bühlertann and Wacker Neuson from Munich ), who are successfully developing this engine concept further with a view to stricter emissions legislation.
