The Solo 720 from Solo Kleinmotoren in Sindelfingen, also known as Solo Electra, was the world's first mass-produced electric moped . It was presented in 1972, but did not go into series production until 1973 ( oil crisis ). The mail order company Quelle also offered it under its own brand Mars .

However, it could only be sold in small numbers because it was offered at a high price of around DM 1,100 with poor performance and a short range. A moped with a two-stroke engine (up to 1.1 kW / 1.5 PS) cost less and did not have the long charging time of the lead-acid battery , which could also be destroyed by deep discharge . Similarly low sales success was Hercules DKW E1 Accu bike (24 volt Bosch GPA motor 800 watts), which likes to be motorized youth despite missing a faint electric moped in the exhaust odor also found almost no buyers.

Technical specifications

The solo Electra (720) is powered by a 24 V - DC motor with a 750- watt of Bosch driven. The moped is put into operation with a key switch, then the motor can be switched on and off. A centrifugal clutch transmits its torque via a V-belt to an intermediate shaft, from which a chain leads to the rear wheel. Since it can also be freewheeled via a pedal crank, it is classified as a bicycle with an auxiliary motor . The power is supplied by two series-connected, standard 12 V car batteries with a capacity of 40 Ah each. The chassis , which holds the 30 kg of the heavy batteries and the remaining 37 kg of the moped, has a telescopic fork at the front and two spring / damper units on the rear swing arm . Both 10-inch wheels have drum brakes . According to the operating instructions, the range was 37 kilometers.

Furnishing

The Solo Electra (720) was usually supplied with a red plastic battery cover and a white frame. A special feature of this moped was the voltmeter for displaying the charge status, which, like the speedometer, is located in the vehicle's headlight housing.

To the basic price of 1,054.50 DM (1973) still came fast - charger should charge for 99,90 DM.
