The Karosserie Baur GmbH was a body building firm with headquarters in Stuttgart .

The company was founded in the Berg district of Stuttgart in 1910 and remained family-owned until bankruptcy at the end of 1998. Most of the company was taken over in 1999 by IVM Automotive , which in turn has been part of the Swedish Semcon group since 2007 . However, the company in2p , founded by a former Baur development manager, emerged from the employees in the design department .

The company achieved fame through the conversion of BMW vehicles. Some of these were produced for official sales by BMW dealers (e.g. 3-series, E21 ). Baur had already offered retrospective conversions of vehicles from the BMW 02 series. Baur also converted the following three generations of the 3-series into the so-called top convertible (BAUR TC).

These Baur conversions of the 3-series BMW are, in contrast to the factory convertibles offered in parallel from 1985 by BMW, not full convertibles, because the window frames are retained and there is a roll bar. There is a sturdy roof element above the driver and front passenger seats, which can be stowed in a bracket in the trunk to save space. The rear part of the roof is a classic folding top with a plastic pane (on the E21 / TC1 and E30 / TC2) or glass pane (on the E36 / TC4). The two-part roof of the Baur TC enabled several variants of open driving, including with an open Targa roof or as a landaulet .

Other vehicles that were produced by Baur are the Opel Kadett Aero and the Bitter CD . In February 2002, the company also presented the G-Cabrio XL at the Geneva Motor Show . It is based on the G-Class convertible from Mercedes-Benz, but differs from this car in many ways, e.g. B. in length.
