The G-Class (or G-model ; G stands for off-road vehicle ) is a model series by Mercedes-Benz that has been in production since 1979. It was developed in cooperation with the Austrian Steyr Daimler Puch Group and is manufactured in Graz . Until 1999 the class was sold in Austria and some other countries under the Puch G brand. In its basic form, the vehicle was hardly changed between 1979 and 2018, but technically it was repeatedly improved and updated. These mainly concerned engine variants, the interior and safety features. In 2018 Mercedes-Benz presented a new generation that has still not changed much in appearance.

By July 2017, Mercedes-Benz had built over 300,000 vehicles. Older, well-kept models are now traded at enthusiast prices in the classic scene.

Model history

General

Rear view

Basically three body variants of the G-Class were built for civil use: a two-door convertible, a closed three-door (station short) and a five-door long version (station long). The original variant of the W 460 was produced until 1990, after which it was divided into two models for different customer requirements: W 461 with selectable all-wheel drive and somewhat reduced equipment for authorities, municipalities and armed forces, and W 463 with more sophisticated equipment and permanent all-wheel drive. The designation W 462 refers to the vehicles of the W 461, which are assembled as CKD sets at ELBO in Greece.

From 2001, the customer base of the W 461 series was served with the G 270 CDI Worker . This was equipped with the 2.7 liter inline five-cylinder OM 612 and developed 115 kW (156 PS) and a max. Torque of 400 Nm. From 2007 it was also offered with the current OM 642 as the G 280 CDI - but only for authorities, municipalities and the military. For private individuals, the new version of the 461 was initially available as EditionPur in a limited edition from May 2009, from January 2010 an almost identical model was available as the G 280 CDI or G 280/300 (with Euro 5) CDI Professional. The vehicle electronics were largely relocated to the interior in order to be able to cope with the tougher use by the military and authorities; the fording depth and ground clearance have been slightly increased compared to the 463. A bad fuel variant of the OM 642 is also available, but only in the Euro 3 emissions standard with individual approval.

In addition to the long station and the panel van with 2850 mm wheelbase, the chassis with / without platform and a wheelbase of 3428 mm are again available as body variants.

The G-Class is considered to be one of the most off-road vehicles suitable for everyday use, despite the rather low axle articulation compared to the competition , especially when compared to the Land Rover Defender . The lower axle articulation can be compensated for by three differential locks. The tilt angle of the G is approx. 38 degrees. 35 degrees are safe to drive on a good surface, statically the car tilts at 40 degrees, whereby it depends on the tires, the center of gravity, the load and the roof load.

In 1972, Daimler-Benz and the Austrian manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch (now Magna Steyr ) agreed to jointly develop an off-road vehicle. This happened at the urging of the Iranian ruler Mohammad Reza Pahlavi , who owned up to 18% of Daimler-Benz shares. The car was intended for border patrols and as a hunting car in Iran. Initially, the hope was for the Bundeswehr as an additional customer. Some of the models made available met with a great response, but ultimately the VW Iltis was chosen for cost reasons . In 1975 series production was decided and Graz was chosen as the production location, where most of the development work was carried out. The G-Class is still manufactured there today with a considerable amount of manual work. In addition to production, the further development of the G-Class has also been based in Graz since 1992.

The requirements for the off-road vehicle were primarily off-road capability, even under difficult conditions, tractive power and durability. The G-Model is designed accordingly. The basis of the vehicle is a box frame made of closed longitudinal profiles and cross members. The axles are rigid , the long suspension travel and the large ground clearance as well as switchable differential locks are useful in the field. The G-Class performed well off-road, so that to this day the car is not only bought by off-road fans, hunters and riders. Various armed forces , fire brigades , disaster control and the UN also use the military version of the G model called Wolf .

In February 1977, Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch founded a joint venture, Geländefahrzeug Gesellschaft mbH (GfG) based in Graz. Both partners each held 50% of the shares. GfG was responsible for the start of production in 1979 and was also listed as the manufacturer of the off-road vehicle in the vehicle registration document.

In 1981 the German-Austrian cooperation was reorganized. Daimler-Benz exclusively took over the further development of the vehicle, Steyr-Puch focused on the production on a subcontract basis. With the dissolution of the GfG, it is no longer the official manufacturer of the G-model, since August 1, 1981, Daimler-Benz AG has been entered in the vehicle documents as the manufacturer.

The smallest engine available in 1979 was the Mercedes OM 616 , a four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters and an output of 53 kW (72 hp). The top speed was 117 km / h. The most popular variant was the 300 GD with the 3-liter five-cylinder OM 617 engine known from passenger car production . The most powerful variant, the 280 GE equipped with the M 110 , developed 115 kW (156 hp) (throttled by reducing compression and using tighter camshafts). A planned variant of the 300 GD as a 300 GD turbodiesel was no longer implemented because the subsequent engine generation had already been developed. At the special customer request, some vehicles were fitted with the OM 617 A ex works. Automatic transmissions from the light van series from Mercedes-Benz were optionally available for the 230 GE, 280 GE and 300 GD from 1981.

In 1983 Jacky Ickx won the Paris-Dakar rally with a G-model . In the following years, the equipment was continuously expanded, among other things, the convertible got a better convertible top. A catalytic converter was also available in the G-Class from 1986.

In 1990 the W 463 series was introduced. In 1992 the W 461 replaced the W 460. A year later, the 500 GE with an eight-cylinder V-engine is presented as a special model . At the same time, the type designation will be changed over to all Mercedes model series (e.g. 290 GD to G 290 D). In 2001, sales of the W 461 were stopped. However, this is still produced for the military and municipalities; In 2001 there was a move away from the "classic" all-wheel drive concept with rigidly selectable front-wheel drive towards permanent all-wheel drive of the W 463 type. The W 461 has also been available to private customers again since 2009, initially as a limited G 280 CDI Edition.Pur , and since 2010 as the G-Class Professional. With the G 280 CDI Edition.Pur , the 461 series is also converted to permanent all-wheel drive.

Little by little, new engines were introduced in the W 463; In 1999, the first AMG version of the G-model came onto the market, with a naturally aspirated V8 engine producing 260 kW (354 hp). New diesel engines with CDI technology were now also offered in the G-Class. At the beginning of the new millennium, output rose to up to 184 kW (250 hp) for the diesel-powered G 400 CDI and 350 kW (476 hp) for the gasoline-powered G 55 AMG , which was charged from 2004 . AMG offered a few copies of the G 63 with a 6.3 liter twelve-cylinder engine. Only about 13 copies were built, with a seven-seater long version on request.

From 2006, xenon headlights were optionally available. Before the discontinuation, four engines (G 350 d, G 500, G 63, G 65) and only one body shape were available after the version with short wheelbase in 2012 and the convertible at the end of 2013, with the AMG variants only when long models were offered. The diesel developed 180 kW (245 hp), the G 500 with the current 4.0 liter V8 ( engine M 176 ) 310 kW (422 hp).

For the French army, from 1981 Peugeot assembled the P4 VLTT ( Voiture Légère Tous Terrains ) with the body of the G-Class, but with the Indénor diesel engine XD2 with side camshaft (as it was also used in the Peugeot 504 ) and Peugeot gearbox and axes.

Puch G and Mercedes G

The different brand names Puch G and Mercedes-Benz G-Class resulted from the sales responsibility agreed between the two partners: In Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Yugoslavia and its successor states (Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia / Herzegovina), Great Britain (W 461) and in parts of Africa the off-road vehicle was sold as Puch G, in all other countries as Mercedes G.

The division of the sales regions was completed in 2000. At this point in time, around 10 percent of the G-Class had a Puch emblem and around 90 percent the Mercedes star. Even if the off-road vehicles have been leaving the factory as Mercedes-Gs as standard since 2000, the Puch competence center of Magna continues to offer the corresponding symbols for a subsequent optical conversion to Puch G.

Arnold Schwarzenegger drives the first Puch G in the USA . For Pope John Paul II's visit to Austria in 1983, Puch's trademarks were attached to the Popemobile instead of the Mercedes-Benz.

Facelift 2007

For the 2007 model year, a revised version of the off-road vehicle was presented, which was mainly updated in the interior. Externally, bi-xenon headlights were used as standard and the rear lights were changed. The new models were delivered from April 2007.

The facelifted cockpit received a new instrument cluster with four chrome-rimmed round instruments from the C-Class . Also new is the illuminated four-spoke multifunction steering wheel, which is made of leather in the G 320 CDI and a leather-wood combination in the other models. In addition, the center console was modified and got new controls and switches for the air conditioning. A CD radio with telephone keypad is now installed as standard in models with a diesel engine, and front seat heating is also standard for all models. The Comand APS system with DVD navigation, radio, CD player and compass function is available for an extra charge or in conjunction with the gasoline engines.

The range of optional equipment was expanded as part of the model update. This includes a reversing camera, a tire pressure monitoring system and a sports exhaust system, similar to that in the G 55 AMG. In addition to the Artico interior package with seat covers made from a man-made leather , the new color cognac extends the previous gray or black leather interior.

Facelift 2008

After the G-Class was slightly facelifted in 2007, especially in the interior, another facelift followed, which was delivered from September 2008 at slightly higher prices. This revision mainly contained a new radiator grille with three wide instead of seven narrow slats. Other changes affected the infotainment system, which was now equipped with a Bluetooth hands-free system as standard. An MP3 connection was also offered, which can be operated via the multifunction steering wheel. While a six-disc CD changer is used in the G 320 CDI, the G 500 has the COMAND APS multimedia system with six-disc DVD changer, voice control, hard-disc navigation, telephone operation and a special off-road menu.

As part of the facelift, the G 500 received a new 5.5-liter V8 engine with 285 kW (388 hp) and newly designed 18-inch aluminum wheels. It replaced the previously used 5.0-liter gasoline engine with 218 kW (296 hp). With the new engine, the convertible and short version of the G-Class accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds and the long version in 6.1 seconds.

To mark the 30th anniversary of production, Mercedes offered two special models in 2009: the G 500 Edition 30 with upgraded interior and exclusive designo leather. The price lists also included the G 280 CDI Edition 30 PUR , a G-Class based on the W 461 with Spartan equipment and the V6 turbodiesel OM 642 DE LA red. and the 463's powertrain.

At the end of production of the short G-Class three-door in mid-2012, a special model called BA3 Final Edition was launched in summer 2011 . This special model was characterized by a radiator grille and fenders in the AMG style; Running boards and spare wheel covers bear a three-dimensional brand logo. There were also 18-inch rims, metallic paintwork and carbon-look applications on the protective strips. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz offered the Edition Select special model for the five-door model . The two-tone paintwork is striking, with the front and rear bumpers, the flared fenders and the exterior mirrors being painted black. The running boards and the spare wheel cover with three-dimensional Mercedes-Benz star are made of stainless steel. This special model can also be recognized by its black 18-inch light alloy wheels. The interior has also been upgraded, for example the dashboard, armrest, door handles and the handbrake lever are covered in black leather and some have a decorative stitching in a contrasting color.

Facelift 2012

Another facelift took place on June 30, 2012, which in particular resulted in a heavily redesigned interior. While all W 463 models on the exterior now have LED daytime running lights, which are mounted below the headlights, and have newly designed side mirrors, the interior has a completely redesigned center console and instrument panel. The latter comes from the ML (W 166) . On the one hand, the well-known engines in the G 350 BlueTEC and G 500 served as drive , on the other hand two new AMG models were added, which replaced the G 55 AMG . The 5.5-liter V8 biturbo in the G 63 AMG develops 400 kW (544 hp), the G 65 AMG with a six-liter V12 biturbo gasoline engine develops 450 kW (612 hp). These AMG models differ from the conventional models in that they have a two-lamella grille and bumpers with larger air intakes. The G-Class has also been redesigned on the technical side , so that the 7G-Tronic Plus , with the G 63 AMG with automatic start-stop, and the Comand Online infotainment system with navigation system and internet access are standard equipment and numerous assistance systems are also available.

When production of the convertible was discontinued at the end of 2013, the Final Edition 200 , limited to 200 units, was introduced in mid-2013 and is equipped with a beige soft top. Before the premiere at the IAA 2013, all units had already been sold. The only engine available was the G 500.

G 650 Landaulet

The 5.35 meter long Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet was presented at the 87th Geneva Motor Show in March 2017 . It is based on the G 500 4 × 4 2 , but takes over the drive from the 463 kW (630 hp) G 65 AMG . This accelerates the 3.3-ton landaulet to 100 km / h in under six seconds, the top speed is limited to 180 km / h. The vehicle is limited to 99 copies and went on sale in September 2017 at a price of 749,700 euros.

Today's models

Over the years, the G-Class has undergone several careful model maintenance measures and has repeatedly received more modern and more powerful gasoline and diesel engines as well as ABS , ESP , 4ETS, brake assist , airbag and many other technical innovations. AMG , the tuning department of Mercedes-Benz, offers optically revised and enhanced variants. The solid box frame allows a large number of individual structures and model variants.

The Mercedes tuner Brabus also offers up to 662 kW (900 hp) G models. The most exclusive vehicle of these is likely to be the Brabus 900 "One of Ten" presented at the IAA 2017 , which, as the name suggests, is limited to ten vehicles. With a top speed of 270 km / h, it is also the fastest G-model.

New model 2018

After almost forty years, the Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG , Dieter Zetsche , presented a completely newly developed G-Class together with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Michigan Theater at the North American International Auto Show in January 2018. Despite the extensive changes compared to its predecessor, the new G-Class retains the model series designation W 463. The G-Class first came to dealers as the G 500 in May 2018 at prices from 107,040 euros.

Compared to the previous model, the width of the new G-Class has increased by 121 millimeters, as the 1979 concept was no longer up-to-date in this regard. In addition, the new G-Class is 53 millimeters longer and now has 6 millimeters more ground clearance. With the same engine, the weight saving is around 170 kilograms. Despite all of this, the vehicle only differs optically in details from the previous model.

However, due to the age of the basic concept of the predecessor, the technical innovations are great. Among other things, the new W 463 now has independent wheel suspension instead of a rigid axle on the front axle ; this is only used on the rear axle. Furthermore, the ground reduction was shortened from 2.1: 1 to 2.9: 1. In addition, the indicators on the fender are now pushed down in the event of an accident in order to increase pedestrian protection. In the interior, the new model now has the digital cockpit familiar from the S-Class .

Mercedes-AMG presented the G 63 at the 88th Geneva Motor Show in March 2018. The previous 5.5-liter V8 petrol engine M 157 is being replaced by the four-liter V8 petrol engine M 177 . With 430 kW (585 PS), the new G 63 now has an output of 10 kW (14 PS) more than the previous model. The off-road vehicle should accelerate to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds, and Mercedes-AMG specifies a top speed of 220 km / h. It can be increased to 240 km / h with the optional AMG Drivers Package . The Mercedes-AMG G 63 has been on sale since March 18, 2018. The first vehicles were delivered in June 2018.
