The Mercedes-Benz W 04 with the sales designation 12/55 PS Type 320 was a further development of the Mercedes-Benz W 03 designed by Ferdinand Porsche , an upper middle-class car.

A shorter rear axle ratio (1: 5.4 for the flat land version and 1: 5.8 for the mountain version) should increase the ability to accelerate. In addition, a six-cylinder in-line engine with a further increased displacement of 3131 cm³ (bore × stroke = 76 mm × 115 mm), but the same output of 55 hp (40 kW) at 3200 rpm was used. The result was top speeds of 100 km / h in the flat land version and 95 km / h in the mountain version. The rear wheels, which were suspended from a rigid axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, were driven via a four-speed gearbox. The front axle was also rigid and had semi-elliptic leaf springs. The car was equipped with cable brakes for all four wheels.

Once again, buyers did not honor the improvement. Sales remained at a low level. In 1929 the third revision to the Mercedes-Benz W 05 was due.
