Previous model Mercedes-Benz W 23

The Mercedes-Benz W 28 (sales name: Mercedes-Benz 170 H ) was a further development of the Mercedes-Benz - rear-engine car type 130 with components of type 170 V . It was produced from 1936 to 1939.

history

The car was presented in February 1936 together with its sister model, the 170 V, and the larger diesel model 260 D at the International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition (IAMA) in Berlin. The cars were more luxuriously equipped than the sister model with a front engine and at RM  4350, - more expensive by 15%. In 1939 the rear - engined cars were discontinued without a successor due to the war and insufficient demand.

engine and gears

The Mercedes-Benz 170 H was equipped with a side-controlled four - cylinder in - line engine installed lengthways in the rear. The engine with a displacement of 1697 cm³ developed 38 hp (28 kW) at 3400 rpm and thus corresponded to that of the 170 V front-engine model. As with the predecessor, the four-speed gearbox with overdrive was installed in front of the rear axle.

landing gear

A pendulum axle with coil springs was installed at the rear . The front wheels hung without axles on two transverse leaf springs ( independent wheel suspension ). The design thus corresponded to that of the predecessor model 130. Compared to the front-engine model 170 V, the handling was worse because of the rear-heaviness.

Body versions

The cars were available as a sedan or a convertible sedan . All superstructures had two rear-hinged doors. The trunk of the 170 H in the front of the vehicle was significantly smaller than the rear in the 170 V sister model. The 170 H also served as the basis of the aerodynamically optimized Schlör wagon .
