The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (internal designation C 197 , SLS AMG Roadster R 197 ) is a Gran Turismo - coupe with gull-wing doors . The sports car from Mercedes-Benz in September 2009 at the IAA presented for the first time and went on sale on March 27 of 2010. The roadster variant SLS AMG Roadster was officially presented at the IAA in autumn 2011 and went on sale on November 19, 2011. The name SLS is short for “Sport Leicht Super”.

The vehicle is the first Mercedes-Benz with gullwing doors since the 300 SLR (Uhlenhaut-Coupé) or the 300 SL , which was built from 1954 to 1957 and had a decisive influence on the company's reputation.

It is the first vehicle developed independently by AMG . Each engine is assembled by hand by a single worker at the AMG plant in Affalterbach and documented with a corresponding badge with his engraved signature. The car is assembled at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen . In the formula 1 was SLS AMG as a safety car used.

By the end of 2011, over 5000 vehicles had been sold worldwide.

With the GT Final Edition presented in November 2013, production of the Mercedes SLS AMG ended in June 2014.

The GT3 was produced until 2016.

Body and interior

The body shell is a lattice frame made of aluminum and weighs 241 kilograms, the outer skin of the vehicle is also made of aluminum. The two wing doors each weigh 18 kg and have small explosives on the door hinges. These enable the doors to be blown off after an accident when the vehicle comes to rest on the roof. This makes it much easier for rescue workers to rescue the injured from the interior. The weight distribution between the front and rear axles is in the typical sports car ratio of 47 to 53 percent. As a development partner, the Austrian automotive supplier Magna Steyr was commissioned to produce the body and deliver it to AMG, as well as the gullwing doors and flaps, fully painted (with the exception of a few special colors) .

The body of the roadster was reinforced in the sill area, on the windshield frame and on the center tunnel to compensate for the omission of the roof (and the gullwing doors). The hood is available in three-layer fabric in black, beige or red and opens within 11 seconds, even while driving at up to 50 km / h.

According to the manufacturer, the interior design of the SLS AMG should incorporate elements from the design of an aircraft cockpit: centrally arranged instruments in pilot optics, a center console inclined towards the driver as a central operating unit with typical aircraft controls (the gear stick is similar to the thrust lever of a jet) and four on jet engines reminding ventilation elements.

The engine with the AMG internal designation M 159 is a behind the front axle as a front mid-engine built V8 - aspirated engine with dry sump lubrication and 6208 cm 3 displacement. Thanks to the dry sump lubrication, the motor is installed in a particularly deep position. As a special feature, there is a newly developed intake tract. The maximum engine output is 420 kW (571 hp) at a speed of 6800 revolutions per minute. The engine develops a maximum torque of 650 Newton meters and weighs 206 kilograms.

The seven-speed dual clutch transmission from the manufacturer Getrag is mounted directly on the rear axle in a transaxle design . The transmission with the designation 7DCL750 was installed in the Ferrari 458 in addition to the SLS . The motor and gearbox are rigidly connected to one another via a so-called torque tube - a one-piece tube in which the 1640 mm long, only 4 kg heavy CfK transaxle shaft rotates. A mechanical limited slip differential is standard. Four different drive programs from "comfortable" to "sporty" are available for gearbox tuning. A so-called race-start function enables starts with optimal slip on the rear axle.

Model variants

SLS AMG GT

The SLS AMG GT is a slightly revised version of the SLS AMG. The engine's output has been increased by 15 kW compared to the normal SLS and is thus 435 kW (591 hp). In addition to the increase in performance, the Speedshift automatic transmission and the AMG Ride Control Performance suspension have been improved. The only visual changes are darkened headlights and taillights as well as a GT badge on the rear. The interior was equipped with Alcantara stripes on the seats, red stitching and black high-gloss trim. Surcharge for the SLS AMG GT : around € 20,000.

SLS AMG GT3

The SLS AMG GT3 is the racing variant according to the GT3 regulations of the FIA . This is the only homologated model of the SLS.

SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary

This special model based on the SLS AMG GT3 was presented to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz in-house tuner AMG . The two-seater special version, limited to just five copies, costs € 446,250 just under € 50,000 more than the normal SLS AMG GT3. The 45th Anniversary is only available in the color designo magno graphite .

SLS AMG E-Cell and Electric Drive

Production version SLS AMG Electric Drive at the Geneva Motor Show 2013

In 2010, Mercedes-Benz presented the SLS AMG E-Cell, the prototype of an electric sports car based on the SLS AMG, which later went into series production under the name SLS AMG Electric Drive . Noticeable about this vehicle are the bright, neon yellow paintwork and the minor changes to the body.

In the series version Electric Drive , four electric motors together generate an output of 552 kW (751 hp) and a torque of 1000 Nm. This enables acceleration from 0-100 km / h in 3.9 seconds. The maximum speed is a regulated 250 km / h. The market launch was in 2013.

Because of the electric all-wheel drive, the front axle was redesigned and is now designed as a multi-link axle with horizontal spring struts and push rods.

SLS AMG Black Series

SLS AMG Black Series

Technically, the SLS AMG GT Final Edition is equipped with the 6.2 liter V8 with 435 kW (591 PS) and 650 Nm torque and was offered as a Coupé and Roadster in March 2014. It accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 3.7 s and reaches a top speed of 320 km / h. Visually, the Final Edition has a carbon bonnet, a black front spoiler lip, optional exterior mirrors in carbon covers and brake calipers painted red as standard. Unlike the SLS AMG GT, the Final Edition had a fixed black wing at the rear , just like the Black Series. The interior has been upgraded with a diamond design on the seats, the door panels with silver stitching and silver seat belts. The price for the Coupé started at 225,505 euros and for the Roadster at 233,835 euros. Production was limited to 350 pieces. The Final Edition premiered on November 22, 2013 at the LA Auto Show and the Tokyo Motor Show .
