successor Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

The Maybach 57, Maybach 57 S and Maybach 62, Maybach 62 S were the only series models from the Maybach brand since DaimlerChrysler AG (now Daimler AG ) re-launched this brand in 2002 for the Group's most luxurious and expensive sedans . The type designations refer to the vehicle lengths in decimeters (around 5.70 m and 6.20 m).

The last model was assembled on December 17, 2012. Originally, production was supposed to continue until 2013, but this no longer happened due to the ever decreasing demand.

history

With the takeover of Rolls-Royce by the BMW Group and Bentley by VW , DaimlerChrysler feared that it would have to remain outside the niche of large luxury limousines with the restriction to the clearly defined Mercedes-Benz brand . Establishing a new, higher-positioned and exclusive own brand seemed the best way to go, and so the decision was made to revive the traditional brand name Maybach . On this basis and in view of the optimistic forecasts for the development of the market to be served by the vehicle, the decision was made to design and build a vehicle that was to be positioned well above the in-house S-Class .

However, the market forecasts were set too high. A new competition in the form of the Bentley Continental Flying Spur , which offered an established brand label for less than half the price of a Maybach, also drew potential buyers away. However, the design of the vehicle turned out to be the biggest problem for sales. While well-meaning commentators spoke of subtle lines, other critics were more merciless in their judgment: There was often talk of a “pumped-up Mercedes-Benz S-Class” and the lack of independence of the models 57 and 62 was clearly pointed out.

Of the models, which cost between 300,000 and 500,000 euros, only half as many vehicles as planned had been sold by 2005. In 2004 around 500 Maybach were sold worldwide, 41 of them in Germany. A total of 25 German approvals were recorded for 2005; in 2006 this number only increased slightly to 32. The Maybach division thus posted losses. In 2007 there were 29 registrations in Germany, 26 in 2008 and 31 in 2009 for Maybach automobiles.

For these reasons, it was initially planned to stop Maybach production in mid-2013. Due to the lack of incoming orders, production for the 2013 model year was completely canceled and production ended in December 2012. In the last production year 2012, 234 models were delivered worldwide.

Model variants

Maybach 57 S (2005)

Between June 2002 and June 2012 the sedan was manufactured in the Maybach factory in Sindelfingen . The internal designation of Daimler AG for the short sedan (in all model variants) is W 240, that for the long version is V 240, thus using type designations from Mercedes-Benz . The chassis was adapted from the Mercedes-Benz 140 series (S-Class from 1991), the electronic platform comes from the Mercedes-Benz 220 series (S-Class from 1998).

The Maybach 57 S was presented on the occasion of the 75th International Geneva Motor Show in March 2005 (S for special). He has a firmer chassis; It differs visually through a modified radiator grille, 20-inch rims, stainless steel covers on the exhaust and a carbon look in the interior. The engine of the S-model has a displacement of 6 instead of 5.5 liters, the output has been increased to 450 kW (612 PS), the governed top speed increased from 250 km / h to 275 km / h. The base price of the Maybach 57 S was 417,600 euros. Delivery started in autumn 2005.

Maybach Zeppelin

From the beginning of 2009 Daimler offered the Maybach Zeppelin - a reference to the top models of the same name from the 1930s. This special series was limited to 100 units and, in addition to 21 kW (28 PS), offered more engine power than the S model thanks to new turbochargers and many details in the interior, for example a perfume dispenser costing 5,000 euros on request, as well as a shoulder line in a contrasting color. The model was available in short and long versions. With a price starting at 560,000 euros for the long version, it was the most expensive production sedan in the world.

Maybach Landaulet

The landaulet is a Maybach 62 S with a fabric top over the rear compartment. The study was presented in early November 2007 and exhibited at the Dubai Motor Show . Due to the positive response, the vehicle could be custom-built between 2008 and 2013 on request.

Maybach 57 S Coupé

The two-door coupé was manufactured in 2011 by the body builder and special vehicle manufacturer Xenatec from Weinsberg - it emerged from the ThyssenKrupp Drauz Nothelfer company - based on the Maybach 57 S until its bankruptcy. 100 vehicles were planned, of which the first 20 should be delivered in 2010.

The designer was Fredrik Burchhardt, who also designed the Maybach Coupé Exelero . Compared to the sedan, the roof was essentially lowered and the B-pillar moved 20 cm to the rear; the wheelbase and thus the four-seater as well as the drive train remained unchanged. The extras of the sedan, including the glass roof and armor, could also be ordered for the coupé. The base price excluding taxes was € 675,000.

Maybach Guard

Since the buyers of Maybach models are mainly celebrities, royal families, multimillionaires and billionaires, the Maybach manufacture also offered models from the so-called “Maybach Guard” series. These vehicles are equipped with special safety technology.

A distinction is made between light and heavy armor, according to the so-called fire classes B4 and B6 / 7. While Maybach itself only offered the “light” B4 class, specialized conversion companies also offered the B6 / B7 bullet class, which is currently the highest protection level. This is characterized by, among other things, reinforced aramid mats and thicker panes. Intercom and fire extinguishing system are also standard.

The equipment of a Maybach, which can be supplied at an additional cost, included a partition and a panoramic roof. Both could be switched to transparent or opaque independently of one another by using electrochromic glass .

economics

The total cost of reviving the Maybach brand and developing the 57 and 62 models by 2011 is estimated at one billion euros. Due to the unfulfilled sales expectations of around 3000 units by the end of 2011, the company made a high loss. The British automobile magazine CAR assumes a loss of around 330,000 euros per vehicle sold.
