successor Mercedes-Benz 220 series

The Mercedes-Benz 140 series denotes luxury- class vehicles that debuted as the successor to the 126 series at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991 . It was built under the name Mercedes-Benz S-Class between July 1991 and September 1998. The vehicle was offered as a sedan (W 140), an extended sedan (V 140) and a coupé ( C 140 ). 406,717 units of the sedan were produced, and 26,025 of the coupé. In 1997 a custom-made product was delivered for Pope John Paul II , an S 500 long landaulet . In addition, there was a Pullman limousine from the manufacturer as a representative vehicle.

Model history

General

Rear view

Development began in 1981 and production was originally scheduled to start in October 1989. The chief designer was Bruno Sacco . Between 1982 and 1986 several design drafts were drawn up, on December 9, 1986 one of them was selected by Olivier Boulay. Several prototypes were then tested, and the final production design was frozen in 1987, German patents pending on February 23, 1988. In 1989 Lexus presented the LS 400 luxury sedan . In response to their quality and equipment, Daimler-Benz was forced to make improvements shortly before the start of series production in 1991 in order to consolidate the market position of the W 140. This led to a cost overrun and the Daimler-Benz chief developer Wolfgang Peter was fired.

The W 140 marks a significant technological leap at Mercedes-Benz. The large V12 engine was a response to competitor BMW, which in 1987 brought the E32 750i with a twelve-cylinder engine onto the market. Double glazing, networking of the control units via CAN bus and the significantly increased external dimensions should make Mercedes-Benz's claim to leadership within the luxury class clear.

The trunk volume is 525 l (sedan) and 505 l (coupé). The cross-sectional area (c w × A) effective for air resistance is 0.30 × 2.39 m² for the sedan and 0.29 × 2.33 m² for the coupé. The W140 has recirculating ball steering with a parameter function. The foot brake is a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system with a vacuum brake booster and internally ventilated disc brakes at the front and rear; the parking brake is foot-operated and acts mechanically on the rear wheels.

Technology and innovation

Dipstick on the rear right fender
  • In the 140 series has a cross-linking of control devices via the CAN bus implemented (five CAN bus node).
  • During construction, great importance was attached to the possibility of extensive recycling of the vehicle. For this purpose, even the smallest plastic parts were labeled according to type. Mainly for this reason, the S-Class received the US “Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award” from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1992 .
  • With the optional voice control (LINGUATRONIC) introduced in 1996 in the 140 series, Mercedes was the first manufacturer in the world to offer such a system. It allows the speaker-independent control of the fixed car phone from AEG .
  • The parking aid available in many vehicles today is also a development that was first available (as an option) in the S-Class from May 1995. It was standard on the S 600. Alternatively, dipsticks were installed in the rear fenders, which extend about eight centimeters when reverse gear is engaged and should make maneuvering the large vehicle easier.
  • Another important new development was the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) (from 1995), which can be found in all new vehicles today and was developed in cooperation with the Bosch company .
  • The Adaptive Damping System (ADS), an electronic damper control, was introduced in 1995.
  • For the first time, double laminated safety glass was used as standard for the side windows in order to improve heat and sound insulation.

Facelift

This S 500 for John Paul II was the only landaulet of the 140 series. The Popemobile was delivered to the Vatican in 1997 .

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1994, Mercedes-Benz presented the revised model of the 140 series.

The indentation of the lower parts of the bumpers and side protection surfaces was more pronounced, and both were horizontally structured by a circumferential bead. The radiator grille and the headlights were changed, they appeared wider. The six-cylinder and eight-cylinder models received a newly designed radiator grille with a vertical crease in the middle. At the same time, a separate version with chrome-plated transverse lamellae and a significantly wider chrome frame was used for the V12 engines. The rear section has also been redesigned: the rear overall appeared wider and lower. A few months after the presentation of the facelift model, the exterior mirrors were also slightly rounded and given a horizontal bead.

There was a second revision in June 1996. Some add-on parts that were previously in a contrasting color were now available in the body color. In addition, the indicators integrated in the rear lights were given a white cover. Other changes were:

  • The 5-speed automatic transmission with torque converter lock-up clutch and electronic control was now standard equipment on all types (except for the S 280).
  • The traction control system (ASR) was now standard
  • All models are equipped with side airbags for driver and front passenger as standard
  • Seat occupancy detection for triggering the front passenger airbag
  • Rain sensor that regulates the wiping interval depending on the amount of rain
  • Luggage nets in the trunk and passenger footwell
  • Xenon headlights (only for low beam ) with headlight cleaning system and dynamic headlight range control (special request)

Engines

V12 engine M 120 E 60 (1994), 290 kW (394 hp)

The engines range in petrol engines of six-cylinder in-line engines over eight-cylinder engines, V up to a twelve-cylinder V-engine. The V12 engine in the S 600 and S 600 Lang cost a surcharge of 65,000 DM compared to the eight-cylinder, which was a third of the total price. Originally even an 800 SEL with a sixteen-cylinder engine and around 540 hp was planned as the top model. Due to criticism from the press when the series 140 was released, the fully developed V16 was not launched. The smallest engine in the S 280 has an output of 142 kW at 5500 rpm and accelerates the vehicle to a top speed of 215 km / h. The base price for the S 280 was DM 88,467.50 when it was launched and DM 92,104.00 when production was discontinued in April 1998. From 1992, a diesel engine was also available as a six-cylinder prechamber diesel with a turbocharger , which was only offered in the sedans. The engine has a displacement of 3.5 liters and has an output of 110 kW. The successor to the S 350 Turbodiesel was the S 300 Turbodiesel in 1996 , now a 24-valve engine. This engine has an output of 130 kW and a top speed of 206 km / h. The maximum speed for gasoline engines is in the range of 215 to 250 km / h (for S500 and S600, governed) and for diesel engines in the range of 185 to 206 km / h.

From the 140 series only one AMG model with optics and chassis package ("AMG S-Class") was offered. However, at AMG some sedans and coupes were also modified on the engine side. Based on the 500 with V8 engine, AMG built some of the engines known from the E and SL 60 AMG into the S-Class. The 6-liter V8 developed 280 kW. The modified 7.1 and 7.3 liter twelve-cylinders were also installed on the basis of the S 600, with 365 kW and 386 kW respectively. There were also modifications to the drive train and chassis.

In addition, a few coupes were converted to convertibles (18 vehicles, with parts of the 124 convertibles ) and station wagons (ten pieces based on the sedan). Most of them received the AMG V12. Most of these special conversions were exported, mainly to Japan, the USA and the Arab region.

The following engine variants were offered:

Remarks

  • The full load enrichment and the associated increase in performance ceased to apply to all models from September 1992 onwards. However, the new nomenclature S 500 instead of 500 SE did not come into force until June 1993. In the meantime, vehicles with the designation 500 SE (L) with the already reduced performance were built. The same applies to the models S 320/300 SE (L), S 420/400 SE (L) and S 600/600 SE (L).
  • The engine designation is coded as follows: M = engine, OM = oil engine, series = 3 digits, E = manifold injection, KE = port injection, DE = direct injection, ML = compressor, L = charge air cooling, A = exhaust gas turbocharger, red. = reduced performance / displacement, LS = performance increase

S 600 Pullman

S 600 Pullman as the state coach of the then Russian President Dmitri Anatoljewitsch Medvedev

The Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 1995. With this model, Mercedes-Benz continued the tradition of offering a representative vehicle. The chauffeur vehicle has a length of 6.213 m and is thus one meter longer than the long version of the S-Class. The first Pullman versions were produced in August 1996.

Others

The automobiles produced under the Maybach brand, whose production was not discontinued until 2011, are essentially based on the 140 series . In 1996 there was a recall campaign for around 70,000 S-Class vehicles around the world because the front brake hoses had to be equipped with spacers.

On the motorail trains to Sylt , the 140 series could only be transported on wagons for trucks because of its width.

Existence in Germany

The inventory of Mercedes-Benz W 140s is listed according to manufacturer (HSN) and type code numbers (TSN) in Germany according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority . Types with less than 100 vehicles are not shown. Until 2007, the inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since 2008, the inventory has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates.
