The Mercedes-Benz O 320 presented in spring 1951 is the first Daimler-Benz AG bus to combine a front-link body with a rear-mounted engine. Special features of the front section are the transversely arranged air slots instead of a radiator grille and the centrally arranged fog lights. The sales name was initially O 6600 H and was changed to O 320 in 1954 . The O 6600 H as the front handlebar O 6600 from the truck L 6600 derived. The H in the type designation identifies the rear engine. Later it was also offered as a trolleybus with the type designation O 6600 T , the T standing for trolleybus . By 1961, a total of 1935 cab-over-engine buses were built, 363 of which were trolleybuses. While the Deutsche Bundesbahn only procured two sample copies in 1952, the Deutsche Bundespost put 538 buses into service between 1953 and 1958.

City bus
The city bus has air-operated light metal folding doors at the front, in the middle and / or at the rear, as well as a driver's folding door on the left. There is a three-seater longitudinal bench above the wheel arches, and between the wheel arches on the driver's side there are five two-seater chairs on the opposite side, either longitudinal or two-seater chairs. Behind the rear wheel arch there is the platform on buses with a rear door, on buses without a rear door there is a row of two-seater chairs and finally a bench for five people.
The city bus could be ordered with the following seating arrangements:
- 37 seats, 34 or standing room for 62 in city operations
- 23 seats, 44 or standing room for 71 in city operations
- 41 seats, 30 or standing room for 37 in city operations
All-weather travel and overland buses
The all-weather trip and the overland omnibus were advertised as Pullman omnibuses : "Passengers leaning back comfortably in their armchairs have the pleasant feeling of traveling in a Pullman rail car ". Unlike the city bus, both have folding doors on the right-hand side as standard. Compared to the intercity bus, the all-weather bus also has roof edge glazing and a Webasto sliding roof. The roof edge glazing was available for the intercity bus at an additional cost.
In the interior there are ten two-seater chairs with tubular steel seat frames on each side, with the benches above the wheel arches arranged back to back. At the end there is a bench for five people in the rear, the rear entrance is directly in front of it. In the center aisle, ten single folding seats and next to the driver a folding double bench in the intercity bus or two folding seats in the all-weather coach can be installed, so that there is space for up to 57 passengers.

The six-cylinder pre-chamber engine with a displacement of 8.3 liters develops 145 hp. Power is transmitted to the rear axle by an electrically switchable transmission, make ZF Friedrichshafen , with six fully synchronized gears. The transverse engine in the rear is not mounted directly on the chassis, but on a support frame that is bolted to the chassis.
The chassis of the O 6600 H is different from that of the L 6600 truck .

O 6600 T
The trolleybus variant O 6600 T was the most-produced German trolleybus type with 363 units. Of these, however, 350 cars were exported to the Argentine capital Buenos Aires in 1952 and 1953 (numbers 131 to 480). The electrical equipment was supplied by Kiepe . In Germany, the Offenbach am Main trolleybus (nine cars, original numbers 58 to 66; renumbered in 1964 as follows: 58 = 68, 59 = 69, 60 = 67), the Kaiserslautern trolleybus (number 107, built in 1953) and the Pirmasens trolleybus (Number 7, year of construction 1953) Vehicles of this type. There were also two demonstration cars built in 1952 and 1953, which the Rheydt trolleybus bought in 1957 and put into operation with the numbers 88 and 89. The Offenbacher wagons 65 and 67 were also used in 1966/67 when they reached Rheydt, where they were given the new numbers 71 and 87.

The technology of the chassis is the same as that of the O 6600 H. Unlike this, however, there is no diesel engine installed, but a series-connected single commutator motor. This was supplied by various manufacturers.
