The Mercedes-Benz L 315 is a heavy truck from Daimler-Benz AG , which was built in the Mercedes-Benz plant in Gaggenau from 1950 to 1958 and initially marketed as the L 6600 from 1950 to 1955 . The vehicles were rear-wheel drive flatbed trucks, dump trucks and tractor units. From 1953 it was also available with all-wheel drive. From 1955 to 1957, an exclusively rear- wheel drive front control variant supplemented the model range. From 1956, the military LG 315/46 , which the Bundeswehr ordered from 1958 to 1964, was tested especially for the Bundeswehr . 13,735 hooded trucks and 2,480 forward control trucks of the type L 315 were built.

Model variants

  • L 315: basic model, platform, rear-wheel drive (1950–1958)

  • LG 315 platform or special body, all-wheel drive (1953–1964)

technology

Chassis and power transmission

The L 315 is a two-axle truck with a ladder frame made of U-profiles, rigid axles at the front and rear, and longitudinal leaf springs. Progressive additional springs are also built into the rear axle. At the customer's request, hydraulic shock absorbers could be installed on the front axle; they are standard on models with a 5200 mm wheelbase. The car has steel disc wheels of size 11-20 eH all around, with twin wheels at the rear. Tires of size 7.5-20 are mounted on the tapered shoulder rims. Reinforced wheels of size 11-20 eHD and tires of size 8-20 were optionally available. A Westinghouse air brake system from Mercedes-Benz, drum diameter 440 mm, acts on all wheels. The steering is a worm steering with a steering finger and undivided tie rod . The L 315 was built exclusively as a left-hand drive .

The power is transmitted from the diesel engine via a single- disk dry clutch of the Fichtel & Sachs LA50 type to the mechanical and unsynchronized claw transmission of the type ZF AK 6-55 with six gears. The power is transferred from the transmission to the rear axle via a cardan shaft. All-wheel drive models also have a transfer case and therefore three cardan shafts, models with a 5200 mm wheelbase also have a fourth cardan shaft. The rear axle differential is a bevel gear differential with spiral bevel gears.

engine

The engine is the Mercedes-Benz OM 315 ( O el M otor), a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with water cooling and pre-chamber injection . In the military version OM 315 V , the engine is designed as a multi-fuel engine . The crankcase forms a unit with the cylinder block, both are made of nickel-alloyed gray cast iron. The cylinders have a bore of 112 mm, the pistons have a stroke of 140 mm, the total displacement of the engine is 8276 cm³. The forged light alloy pistons from Mahle have four compression rings , one of which is chrome-plated, and two oil control rings . The force is transmitted from the pistons via connecting rods with a double-T cross-section to the forged, hardened crankshaft, which is mounted seven times in plain bearings and is equipped with counterweights and a vibration damper.

The crankshaft drives the camshaft , which has seven bearings in the crankcase, via helical spur gears , which actuates a vertically hanging inlet and outlet valve per cylinder via tappets , push rods and rocker arms . The engine has two removable cylinder heads.

The fuel is cleaned by a felt tube filter and injected into the prechambers by a Bosch PES 6 A 80 B 410 RS 64/7 injection pump with centrifugal governor through Bosch DNO SD 211 injection nozzles. A main flow filter and a fine filter in the bypass flow clean the engine oil. The intake air is cleaned by two oil bath air filters and fed to the intake manifold that runs through the cylinder head cover.
