Radpanzer 90 in the final phase with the Leopard 1A3 turret

The Radpanzer 90 is the prototype of an eight-wheeled combat vehicle ( Radpanzer ) that was developed and built by the Daimler-Benz company on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Defense .

Good performance of the armored wheeled vehicles in service with the Luchs Spähpanzer and Fuchs Transportpanzer (as well as the related positive experiences in other countries with similar vehicles, e.g. AMX-10 RC ) prompted the Ministry of Defense to set up Daimler-Benz in the early 1980s to commission the construction of an armored wheeled combat vehicle. Corresponding studies had shown up to then that it would be technically possible to construct a combat vehicle / battle tank from the 1990s with sufficient armament and armor protection on a wheeled chassis. The combat weight should be around 30 tons, the buoyancy was waived.

From the end of 1983, Daimler-Benz developed and built what was initially called the “demonstration vehicle wheel” and later “experimental vehicle wheel (8 × 8)”, the last name of which was then “Radpanzer 90”.

The basic model corresponded to the required near-series design. It had a drive block in the rear, independent wheel suspension and was prepared to accommodate the turret of the Leopard 1 A3 battle tank. Assemblies of the Luchs reconnaissance tank should be used for propulsion.

The tires used were the special combat wheel with extended run-flat properties, developed by Continental AG on behalf of the BMVg and first presented in 1969.

The test results flowed into the investigations as part of the experiment program “Test vehicle armored transport vehicle with integrated overall protection”, from which the GTK Boxer developed.

The prototype is now in the Defense Technology Study Collection in Koblenz . The turret is a pre-production model (from model T-02) of the Leopard 2 main battle tank , which is probably not functional and is only used for optics.
