Tire pressure control system

A tire pressure regulating system (also known as a tire pressure regulating system ) is used to control the internal tire pressure in motor vehicles with pneumatic tires . Such systems are particularly often installed in off-road vehicles , for example in military vehicles. By regulating the pressure, the traction of the vehicle can be improved in difficult terrain. It is not to be confused with a tire pressure monitoring system that only allows the tire pressure to be monitored.

For example, most modern military trucks and armored wheeled vehicles can control the tire pressure from inside the vehicle in order to adapt the tire pressure of the vehicle to the ground even while driving and thus give it better off-road mobility and traction. Well-known examples are the Tatra trucks T 813 , T 815 and their successors. Such a system is also available in the US off-road vehicle Hummer H1 . There is also an all-terrain vehicle called the Scherp with amphibious abilities, which increases the tire pressure with exhaust gases if necessary and also realizes the suspension via the tire pressure control system.

The compressed air is usually supplied to the rotating tire via a hollow axle or hub . The hub is then connected to the valve on the rim. There are also (retrofit) systems in which a rotary feedthrough to the valve is mounted on the rim . The compressed air is then fed to the outside of the fender by means of a pipe or hose.

Such systems are mainly used on vehicles that cover longer distances on unpaved roads.

Advantages and disadvantages

In agriculture, harvesters and slurry tanks are often equipped with tire pressure regulating systems. Here they primarily serve to reduce soil compaction and the associated long-term damage under wet conditions (see also: bulldozing effect ).

The disadvantage is that minor tire damage is not easily discovered, but is automatically compensated for by the system.
