The Hummer H1 is an off-road vehicle model made by the US military manufacturer AM General . AM General sold the “Hummer” trademark rights to General Motors , which brought the successor models onto the market. Until the introduction of the H2, the Hummer H1 was only referred to as the Hummer (without name affix). In 2006 the production was stopped. At Avtotor in Kaliningrad , the H1 Alpha was produced beyond 2004 for distribution within the Russian market. The Hummer became world famous mainly through the use of its military model HMMWV during the Gulf War.

technology

The Hummer H1 are technically largely the HMMWV , but a 12-volt electrical system has and a comfortable interior with air conditioning, CD player and electric windows (optional). Four diesel models and one gasoline engine were offered ex works. From the 2006 model year, a five-speed automatic version was also available for the H1, which was used exclusively in the H1 Alpha.

Body styles

At peak times, the Hummer H1 was manufactured in five body variants: a convertible-like four-door with an open loading area and tarpaulin roof ( 4-door open top ) and a completely closed five-door ( 4-door wagon ) similar to a station wagon, and also a "slantback" - Model (would be comparable to a hatchback model in Europe), a pick-up version - with the passenger cabin being shortened by the seats in the rear and thus the loading area increased - and a hardtop version with a fixed roof.

Terrain characteristics

The Hummer H1 are known for their terrain characteristics. Thanks to their large track width , they are very stable, can wade 76 cm deep, climb 56 cm high steps, have a ground clearance of 41 cm and can handle angles of departure of 72 ° at the front and 37.5 ° at the rear. The H1 initially had no differential locks, but a force acting on the brake traction control on both axles, from 2003 and electrical Eaton - differential locks , initially only back from 2004 and forward. Similar to the Unimog and the Pinzgauer , the Hummer H1 has portal axles with a reduction directly on the wheels. In addition, most H1s are equipped with a tire pressure control system, which enables the driver to change the tire pressure for each axle at any time according to the ground conditions.

production

The Hummer H1 was manufactured in the same factory as the HMMWV at AM General and shares the drive group with the Humvee. Almost all parts of the body and chassis are identical on the Humvee and the Hummer H1. The biggest difference is in the interior and the electrics: HMMWV have a 24-volt electrical system with two batteries, Hummers have a 12-volt electrical system with two batteries. Both went through the same first production stage, only then was there a split between HMMWV and Hummer.

In June 2006, AM General stopped production of the H1 in favor of HMMWV production, and the capacities that were freed up are used for the military off-road vehicles.

Notoriety

The H1 owes its popularity in part to Arnold Schwarzenegger , who was the first civilian to purchase a Hummer and to this day owns several models.
