Avtotor ( Russian Автотор ) is an automobile manufacturer with headquarters in Kaliningrad, which has existed in the Russian Federation since 1996 . According to Forbes magazine , the company was ranked 69th among the 200 largest private companies in Russia in 1996. In 2008 Avtotor also bought the naming rights for the Hummer and Cadillac brands, limited to the Russian market and the right to develop its own models. All of the company's vehicles are assembled kits . Only the NAC-Trucks and the engines used are from Avtotor's own production. Translated, the company name (company) Avtotor means something like gate for automobiles (to Russia and Asia) or simply Autotor . The factory uses the manufacturer code X4X in the vehicle identification number .

Joint ventures

BMW

In a joint venture with Bayerische Motoren-Werke , production of the BMW 3- series and later the BMW 5- series was started in 1999 . The BMW X3 followed in 2006 and the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models in 2009 .

Chery

In 2006 Avtotor entered into a joint venture with the Chinese automobile brand Chery . In the same year, the production of the Chery Amulet , Chery Fora , Chery QQ , Chery Tiggo and Chery Oriental Son models began . Despite the market success, Avtotor ended the joint venture in December 2008 and switched the corresponding production lines to the BMW models.

GM

The third joint venture was agreed by Avtotor in 2003 with the US company General Motors . On November 21, 2003, the first Russian Chevrolet Lacettis and Chevrolet Lanos rolled off the production line and were the first models from the manufacturer to be included in the compact class . In 2004, however, Avtotor expanded its SUV model range and launched the Hummer H1 Alpha , Hummer H2 , Hummer H3 , the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the Chevrolet Tahoe . The small Chevrolet Spark followed as a small car at the end of 2003 . This is to be replaced by the current version in 2011. In the upper middle class , Avtotor produces the Cadillac STS notchback sedan and the Cadillac DUU SUV . The Lanos, on the other hand, was deleted from the model range in 2009 and replaced by the Cadillac BLS and the Cadillac SRX second generation. For 2010 Avtotor also brought the Cadillac Escalade into the model range.

Kia Motors

Avtotor started its second joint venture in 1998 under the name Ellada Intertreyd with the South Korean car manufacturer Kia Motors . XWE is reserved as the world manufacturer code . However, a separate factory code is not used, so a 0 can be found in the eleventh position of the vehicle identification number . The first model did not roll off the band until spring 2000. It was the mid-range Kia Carnival minivan . This was then replaced by the second generation in 2006. In 2001 Avtotor placed the Kia Magentis notchback sedan in the middle class, which was particularly popular with the middle class. In 2009 the Magentis was replaced by the new generation. As a mid-range SUV, the second generation Kia Sportage was established in 2004 , which has always been adapted to the model updates. In 2006 the upper middle class Kia Opirus followed and in 2007 the compact class Kia cee'd . The third generation of the Kia Carens and the new SUV Kia Mohave came into production a little late in 2009 .

NAC

Avtotor concluded the fourth joint venture in 2005 with the Chinese Nanjing Automobile Corporation . With this, the company expanded its program and started manufacturing commercial vehicles. Since then, the Yuejin NJ 1020 , Yuejin NJ 1041 and Yuejin NJ 1080 trucks have also been manufactured in Russia. Negotiations to launch these models under their own brand name Avtotor have so far been rejected by the NAC.
