The BMW X6 (E71) is a crossover consisting of a sports utility vehicle and a coupé from the car manufacturer BMW . BMW uses the name Sport Activity Coupé (SAC).

The Concept X6 was presented at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt am Main and went into series production in spring 2008; the series model was officially presented at the NAIAS 2008. While most BMW X6 (E71), like the X5 (E70) , were manufactured in the BMW plant in Greer (South Carolina) , production for Russia is made by Avtotor in Kaliningrad .

technology

The marketed from May 2008 car features next to the BMW under the brand name xDrive guided four-wheel drive and standard with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The xDrive all-wheel drive system distributes the drive force variably and continuously between the front and rear axles . The DPC newly introduced by the manufacturer with the X6 also ensures a stepless distribution of drive torque between the left and right rear wheel. This increases driving stability, which, in addition to advantages off-road, should also lead to improved handling when cornering on the road.

Equipment features that are also available in other BMW models:

From March 2010, an eight-speed automatic was installed as standard in all models.

Engines

For the first time in the X6 a newly developed 4.4-liter was V8 - engine available, which on High Precision Injection ( direct fuel injection of the second generation) and the twin-turbo features technology. A world first here was the arrangement of the two turbochargers between the two V8 cylinder banks .

In 2010 the twin turbo engine of the xDrive35i was replaced by the N55 with a turbo (twin scroll).

Efficient Dynamics measures such as brake energy recovery , tires with reduced rolling resistance and air flap control were used to reduce fuel consumption .

A more environmentally friendly, fuel- efficient hybrid version of the X6, which was already presented in Frankfurt under the name BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid , was introduced in autumn 2009. It is 13 mm longer than the normal X6 and also has a slightly different front.

The X6 M (presented: Summer 2009 in Atlanta , Georgia, USA) has a V8 biturbo, which is the first turbocharged M engine. The M-engine is based on the well-known 4.4-liter V8, which is also installed in the xDrive50i. In addition, the X6 M, together with the X5 M, is the first M model to have the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which, like the other electronic chassis systems, has, however, been modified for even more driving dynamics.

ActiveHybrid X6 (E72)

The full hybrid version of the X6 came on the market in April 2010 and was previously shown at the 2007 IAA as the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid concept vehicle . The vehicle has an in-X6 model built 50i 4.4 liter V8 engine with dual turbocharger and an output of 300 kW (407 hp) at 5500 to 6400 min -1 and a torque of 600 Nm at 1750-4500 min −1 . The combustion engine is supported by two electric motors with 67 kW and 63 kW (91 PS and 86 PS) integrated in the gearbox housing. The two electric motors provide 280 Nm and 260 Nm of torque, which can be accessed practically from the first rotation. The maximum system output is 357 kW (485 hp) and the total torque is 780 Nm.
A nickel-metal-hydride battery is installed under the trunk floor as an energy storage device, which has a usable capacity of 2.6 kWh and a separate water cooling circuit. The NiMH battery is charged by recuperation when braking or pushing. For this purpose, depending on the driving situation, either one or both electric motors take over the function of a generator.
The so-called two-mode active transmission comes from a development cooperation with Daimler AG and is a continuously variable automatic transmission that can work in two power-split operating modes: one mode specifically for starting and for low speeds, the other for driving at higher speeds. When starting, only one of the two electric motors works, and the X6 can drive purely electrically at speeds up to 60 km / h. The manufacturer specifies 2.5 km as the maximum range in electric driving mode. If more power is requested, the second electric motor starts the combustion engine and then acts as a generator.

In contrast to the conventionally powered sister models, neither DPC, Active Steering nor Adaptive Drive are available for the Active Hybrid X6, which is mainly due to space and weight reasons. The vehicle weight increases due to the built-in hybrid components by approx. 250 kg to an empty weight of 2525 kg.

Facelift

In July 2012 the X6 was revised and the facelift model will be presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2012. The visual enhancements include the LED-optic parking light rings and taillights as well as slightly modified front and rear aprons.

A technical innovation, however, was the X6 M50d, which is a sporty M version with a diesel engine. Its three-liter in-line six-cylinder has an output of 280 kW (381 hp).
