The pictures show a BMW 315/1, which is almost identical in appearance to the 319/1, in the historic paddock of the Nürburgring. The tank in the rear, the Petri steering wheel and the door handle are retrofitted.

The BMW 319/1 was a small roadster that BMW built in Eisenach from late 1934 to July 1936 as a more powerfully motorized version of the BMW 315/1 . It was the first real sports car from BMW that was also used in races.

history

At the end of 1934, BMW developed the 319/1 with the further enlarged six-cylinder engine of the BMW 315/1. Outwardly, it differed from the smaller model by three horizontal chrome strips on the side radiator grilles. 178 cars were built in the short production time of just over a year. This means that the vehicle is extremely rare today and can almost only be found in museums.

The BMW 328 was developed from the 319/1, which took part in races even more successfully than its predecessor.

technology

The engine with a displacement of 1911 cm³ (bore 65 mm, stroke 96 mm) had overhead valves that were controlled by a side camshaft via bumpers and rocker arms , as well as three Solex flat-flow carburetors 30 BFRH and had a higher compression (1: 6.8 instead of 1: 5.6) as the later 319 , whereby a power of 55 hP (40 kW) at 4000 min -1 revealed. The camshaft was driven by a duplex chain . The engine was water-cooled (7.5 liters with pump) and had pressure circulation lubrication (oil content 4 liters).

The power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a single-disc dry clutch, a Hurth four-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft . The third and fourth gear of the transmission were synchronized .

The suspension was in connection with a tube frame with cross-members of a front single wheel suspension on the lower control arms and a transverse leaf spring above, a rigid axle with semi-elliptic rear hydraulic lever shock absorbers, front and rear as well as rack and pinion steering . The footbrake worked mechanically on drum brakes on all four wheels, the handbrake with a cable on the rear wheels. The moving parts of the chassis were lubricated centrally . The car had disc wheels with drop center rims of size 325 D × 16 and tires of size 5.25-16. The turning circle was 10.6 meters.

As standard, the car had a roadster body with rear-hinged doors without side windows and covers for the rear wheels to reduce air resistance. The car could also be delivered with a special body from Drauz as a two-seater convertible . The roadster's tank, which was also used in motorsport, held 50 liters; it was built into the engine compartment as standard. The top speed of the BMW 319/1 was 130 km / h.

The roadster cost RM 5,800 and was RM 1,650 more expensive than the two-door BMW 319 sedan, which was built from 1935 to 1937.

Due to the low weight of 780 kg and the good power-to-weight ratio, the vehicle was very manoeuvrable. It thus formed the ideal basis for participating in motorsport.

Motorsport

In motorsport, Ernst von Delius was particularly successful with the BMW 319/1. In the Eifel race on June 16, 1935 at the Nürburgring , he took first place in front of Paul von Guilleaume auf Adler and on June 30, 1935 in the Kesselberg race in front of his brand companion Ernst Henne , each in the sports car class up to two liters. On the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, Delius drove the five laps of 114.050 kilometers in 1: 07: 29.0 hours, which meant an average speed of 101.4 km / h.

The BMW 319/1 was also used very successfully in races in England. The vehicles were built by the general importer Frazer Nash in England. They were not only used in circuit races, but also in many distance races. One of the most famous drivers was HJ Aldington, who was running Frazer Nash at the time. Canadian racing driver Key Petre was also very successful with the BMW 319/1.

Harold John Aldington drove a BMW 319/1 at the Kesselberg race in 1935, which he had previously picked up from BMW.
