Ernst Ludwig Ferdinand von Delius (born March 29, 1912 in Plessa , † July 26, 1937 in Bonn ) was a German automobile racing driver for Auto Union .

Life

Von Delius came from a Ravensberg family and was the second of three sons of the mine director and owner, Dr. Ing.hc Friedrich von Delius (1881–1967) and Katharina Louise (Isa) Schwenke (1885–1969). He was a great-great-grandson of Daniel Heinrich Delius . He grew up in the southern Brandenburg municipality of Plessa, where his father had been director of the local lignite works since 1910 and in this function had the first overburden conveyor bridge built according to his plans in 1924 , which revolutionized opencast lignite mining .

Ernst von Delius drove his first race in August 1931 at the AVUS in Berlin as a private driver in a competition for sports cars , in which he was sixth as a blatant newcomer. In the following years he achieved a number of successes in small and large competitions of the time and established his reputation as a great hope of motorsport.

On the advice of Ferdinand Porsche took him in 1935 the Auto Union as a young rider. As a team mate of Bernd Rosemeyer and Hans Stuck , von Delius was soon one of the best drivers in the world. He won the Grosvenor Grand Prix in Cape Town in January 1937 .

A collision with Richard Seaman at the 1937 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring brought his hopeful career to an abrupt end on July 25, 1937. While Seaman got away with minor injuries, Ernst von Delius succumbed to his serious injuries on July 26, 1937 in Bonn. In memory of the merits of the family Delius was in Plessa the Delius Street Von- named after her. In addition, a memorial stone for Ernst von Delius was inaugurated in July 2002 .

From 1932 he was a member of the Corps Franconia Munich .
