1936 Italian Grand Prix
The XV. The Italian Grand Prix took place on September 13, 1936 at the Autodromo di Milano in Monza . As Grande Épreuve , he was part of the European Grand Prix Championship in 1936 and was carried out over 72 laps of 7.0 km each in accordance with the provisions of the International Grand Prix Formula (racing cars up to a maximum of 750 kg empty weight; 85 cm minimum width; race distance at least 500 km) , which corresponded to a total distance of 504.0 km.
The winner was Bernd Rosemeyer in an Auto Union "Type C" , which at the same time secured the title of European Champion .

After failing again at the Swiss Grand Prix , Mercedes-Benz withdrew completely from the Grand Prix stage for the rest of the season in order to concentrate on developing a new model for 1937 . The Auto Union team that had dominated the season so far was clearly the favorites for the last Grande Épreuve of the year. The team appeared with their usual regular line-up, championship leader Bernd Rosemeyer , Achille Varzi and Hans Stuck , while the fourth car this time was again made available to the young driver Ernst von Delius .
After the disappearance of Mercedes-Benz, the main competitor was of course Alfa Romeo , represented by Scuderia Ferrari as always . In contrast to the Stuttgart-based company, the Italians continued to face the challenge despite their previous defeats and competed with a total of four current Alfa Romeo 12C-36 models with V12 engines, which had been completely redesigned since the total failure of Bern. In addition to the regular drivers Tazio Nuvolari , René Dreyfus and Giuseppe Farina , Antonio Brivio was planned as the fourth driver . However, he had an accident during training, so that Carlo Pintacuda joined the team as reserve with an older eight-cylinder Alfa Romeo 8C-35 .
Since Bugatti had not got the new Bugatti Type 59 / 50B - Monoposto afloat again since the Swiss Grand Prix, the field was finally completed by four Maserati alone , but only the Maserati V8-RI driven by Carlo Felice Trossi was a reasonably modern, if not overly competitive model.
As in the previous year, the combination of road and oval course, named after race director Vincenzo Florio , was chosen in Monza. However, the five chicanes distributed over the track were slightly modified, so that the load on the brakes was a little stronger. For the first time, the starting grid at the Italian Grand Prix was also based on the training times achieved, so that the two Auto Unions of Rosemeyer and Stuck, together with Nuvolaris Alfa Romeo, occupied the front row of the grid.
When the starting flag fell, it was Stuck who did the best, and just one lap later Rosemeyer had passed Nuvolari, so that once again two Auto Union racing cars were leading a Grand Prix. Behind the third-placed Alfa Romeo, the other two cars of the German team followed directly. It wasn't long before the fifth-placed Delius junior driver overtook his much more famous Italian stable mate , who drove a little inspired race. Varzi, whose increasing drug consumption was already known in the team, almost literally slept through the race completely and only appeared at the track a few minutes before the start. On the eleventh lap he finally came to the pits with the engine over-revving and the brakes overstrained, and despite intense discussion, he refused to continue the race. In his place, reserve driver Rudolf Hasse took over the cockpit, but only got a few laps before the engine finally failed.
In the meantime, Rosemeyer had taken the lead from Stuck on the fourth lap. Nuvolari soon came by too, but couldn't shake the Auto Union driver off. When both started to lap Trossi (Maserati) on lap 17, Stuck made a mistake, got off the track with his Auto Union and was thrown out of the car in the subsequent accident. Fortunately, his injuries weren't life threatening, but that ended the race for him.
Afterwards, the race clearly stabilized and slowly a certain monotony spread, which could not be broken even during the pit stops that were due in the middle of the race. Only von Delius fell behind Dreyfus in the second Alfa Romeo and was only able to restore the old order four laps before the end. Rosemeyer, on the other hand, had the race under control at all times and in the end secured the undisputed European title with his victory.
