Reports
background
The Andrea Moda Formula transporter was not allowed to enter the paddock because the FISA decided shortly before the Italian GP to exclude the team from the Formula 1 World Championship due to unworthiness.
Nigel Mansell , who was already world champion , was in contract negotiations with the Williams team for the 1993 season . It bothered him that the former world champion Alain Prost had already been signed.
training
For the eleventh time this year, Nigel Mansell qualified for pole position. Ayrton Senna followed in second place in front of Jean Alesi and Riccardo Patrese . Gerhard Berger and Michael Schumacher formed the third row in front of Ivan Capelli and Thierry Boutsen as well as Martin Brundle and Bertrand Gachot .
run
On the morning before the race, Mansell announced that he would be leaving Formula 1 at the end of the season. He justified this by saying that he was allegedly treated badly in the Williams team. From pole position he took the lead and had a lead of twelve seconds over his team-mate Patrese by lap 19. Then he slowed down on purpose, let the Italian pass and from then on demonstrated over several laps that, as a superior driver, he could overtake his team-mate at any time. In the 36th lap he was finally eliminated because of a hydraulic defect. Four laps before the end of the race, Patrese had to slow down for the same reason, leaving Senna in the lead. This finally won ahead of the two Benetton drivers Brundle and Schumacher. Berger was fourth ahead of Patrese. Andrea de Cesaris received the last World Cup point of the day in sixth place.
