The 1992 Brazilian Grand Prix took place in São Paulo on April 5 and was the third race of the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
McLaren traveled to Brazil for the third World Championship round of the year with a total of six racing cars . These were three copies of the MP4 / 6B that had been in use until then, all of which were available as replacement vehicles, as well as three copies of the new MP4 / 7A , which was to take part in a Grand Prix for the first time this weekend.
The Andrea Moda Formula team was present again and managed to get the two S921 racing cars ready to go until shortly before the end of the registration period . Since the Formula 1 newcomer Perry McCarthy, who was to be the second driver, did not have a super license , only one of the two cars was approved for Roberto Moreno for the race weekend.
training
With Moreno's participation, 31 pilots competed for the first time in the current season to qualify for one of the 26 starting positions. Since only 30 vehicles were still allowed for the regular training units, the pre-qualification procedure that was already known from previous years had to be carried out on Friday morning. In addition to Roberto Moreno, the two Larrousse pilots Bertrand Gachot and Ukyō Katayama as well as Michele Alboreto for Footwork and Andrea Chiesa for Fondmetal had to take part. Moreno retired, so that Andrea Moda was again unable to participate in the race.
On the third race weekend of the year , the two Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese secured the front row for the third time with lap times that were almost two seconds shorter than the McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger , who qualified for the second row. Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi shared the third row in front of Martin Brundle and Pierluigi Martini .
run
Since Berger's engine could not be started in time for the warm-up lap, the Austrian had to start from the pit lane. Mansell didn't get off to a good start, so he had to defend himself against Schumacher and Senna while his team-mate Patrese took the lead. During the first lap, Senna overtook Schumacher on the outside of a curve.
The dominance of the two Williams FW14Bs was evident in the fact that the two drivers were able to set themselves apart from the rest of the field, although they dueled for the top position during the following laps. On lap 13, Schumacher again found a way to overtake Senna. A little later he also fell behind Alesi and Brundle and was finally eliminated on lap 17 due to an electronic defect.
Thierry Boutsen and Johnny Herbert were eliminated after colliding in the battle for seventh place. The second Ligier driver Érik Comas had to retire a little later due to a gearbox damage.
With the victory of Nigel Mansell in front of Riccardo Patrese and Michael Schumacher, the podium was the same as two weeks earlier at the Mexican Grand Prix . The third one-two victory in the third race meant the maximum possible number of points for both Team Williams and Mansell and Patrese. Jean Alesi crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of his team-mate Ivan Capelli . The pre-qualifier Michele Alboreto finished sixth.
