Reports
background
The new season started with some restrictions for turbo engines, so that some teams returned to conventional naturally aspirated engines. Another reason for this was the early announcement that from 1989 a complete ban on turbo engines would apply.
At McLaren they sat still a turbo engines, but those of Honda instead as in previous years by Porsche . Ayrton Senna became the new team mate of the then two-time world champion Alain Prost . Senna's place at Team Lotus was taken by Nelson Piquet , whose successor at Williams was Riccardo Patrese , who had already contested the 1987 season finale in Australia instead of Nigel Mansell for the team.
At Benetton , Teo Fabi was replaced by Alessandro Nannini . His former place at Minardi was taken by Formula 1 newcomer Luis Pérez-Sala . Zakspeed committed Piercarlo Ghinzani and the debutant Bernd Schneider , while Martin Brundle decided for Jaguar at the World Cup sports cars take part. Ghinzani was replaced at Ligier by Stefan Johansson , who had to give up his place at McLaren in favor of Ayrton Senna.
Another newcomer to the field was the Brazilian Maurício Gugelmin , who became Ivan Capelli's team-mate at March . Like Williams and Ligier, the team from then on used a naturally aspirated engine from the manufacturer Judd .
In addition to Tyrrell , AGS , Benetton, Larrousse and Coloni , there were now three other teams with the new Rial , EuroBrun and BMS teams that used a Ford-Cosworth engine. EuroBrun signed Oscar Larrauri, a newcomer, and Stefano Modena, a driver who had only contested a Formula 1 race, under contract. At BMS, Alex Caffi , who had contested the 1987 season for Osella , drove a modified Dallara Formula 3000 car with a 3.0-liter engine . In 1988 this team only used one car for Nicola Larini , which was powered by a further developed Alfa Romeo engine, which from then on bore the name Osella .
Only the Ferrari , Larrousse and Arrows teams retained their respective driver line-ups from the previous year. The Brabham team, which was owned by Bernie Ecclestone , did not run in 1988. Its pilot Andrea de Cesaris was then hired by the German team Rial.
In addition to Schneider, Gugelmin, Pérez-Sala and Larrauri, Julian Bailey , who competed for Tyrrell, was a fifth debutant this weekend.
training
Since a total of 31 pilots competed to qualify for one of the 26 starting positions, a pre-qualification was carried out in which five drivers had to take part. These were the pilots from the Rial, EuroBrun, Coloni and BMS teams. Alex Caffi was eliminated as the slowest. The remaining 30 drivers were admitted to the two regular qualification training sessions.
Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position at his home Grand Prix. To the surprise of the professional world, Nigel Mansell took second place on the grid with the naturally aspirated Williams FW12 . Alain Prost and Gerhard Berger formed the second row ahead of Nelson Piquet and Michele Alboreto .
run
Senna's McLaren's transmission got stuck in first gear during the warm-up lap. On the starting grid he signaled this to the race director with a show of hands so that the start was aborted. After switching to the T-Car , Senna finally took up the race from the pit lane.
Mansell initially took the lead, but was overtaken by Prost on the first lap, who from then on defended the top position to the finish. Senna made it to second place by the 20th lap, but was disqualified eleven laps later because his switch to the T-Car turned out to be illegal.
Berger finished in second place ahead of Piquet. Derek Warwick crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Michele Alboreto and Satoru Nakajima .
