At Minardi , Adrián Campos was replaced by Pierluigi Martini after failing to qualify three times in a row. The Spaniard then ended his Formula 1 career. He had only reached the goal twice in about a year and a half.

Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position for the sixth time in a row. Before his McLaren -Teamkollegen Alain Prost , who had previously reached the second place in most cases, this time were the two Ferrari pilots Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto . Thierry Boutsen and Nigel Mansell secured starting positions five and six.

During training on Saturday, Ivan Capelli had a serious accident that resulted in the fracture of a foot bone. In addition, four people were injured in the area of ​​the pit wall. McLaren led the Constructors' World Championship very clearly after the race with 78 points. At this point in time, all other teams had a combined total of just 72 World Championship points.
