The 1988 USA Grand Prix took place in Detroit on June 19 and was the sixth race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship .

At Minardi , Adrián Campos was replaced by Pierluigi Martini after failing to qualify three times in a row. The Spaniard then ended his Formula 1 career. He had only reached the goal twice in about a year and a half.
training
Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position for the sixth time in a row. Before his McLaren -Teamkollegen Alain Prost , who had previously reached the second place in most cases, this time were the two Ferrari pilots Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto . Thierry Boutsen and Nigel Mansell secured starting positions five and six.
During training on Saturday, Ivan Capelli had a serious accident that resulted in the fracture of a foot bone. In addition, four people were injured in the area of the pit wall. Since Capelli could not participate in the race, which is actually not qualified moved Nicola Larini according to the grid.

While Senna defended the lead in front of Berger and Alboreto, Prost initially fell behind Boutsen. By the sixth lap, however, he managed to move up to second place. Once again there was a double victory for the McLaren team, with Senna having a lead of almost 40 seconds over Prost at the finish.
Both Ferrari retired. Since Nelson Piquet also had an accident, the same occupation of the winners' podium resulted as the weekend before in Canada with Boutsen in third place. Andrea de Cesaris took fourth place ahead of Jonathan Palmer and Pierluigi Martini.
McLaren led the Constructors' World Championship very clearly after the race with 78 points. At this point in time, all other teams had a combined total of just 72 World Championship points.
