On the weekend after the Mexican Grand Prix , the US Grand Prix took place for the first time on a street circuit in Phoenix, Arizona . The course turned out to be comparatively unspectacular. In addition, there were only around 32,000 spectators.

Ayrton Senna secured his fifth pole position of the year on the fifth race weekend. He was the only one to complete laps in both qualifying sessions with average speeds of over 150 km / h. For the fourth time in a row, his team-mate Alain Prost took second place in the training classification. Alessandro Nannini and Nigel Mansell formed the second row ahead of Martin Brundle and Alex Caffi .

The order of the first four remained unchanged after the start. In the third lap, however, Nannini fell back to eighth place after he had to steer his Benetton B188 into an emergency exit due to handling problems. After ten laps he gave up the race.

Due to technical failures by Senna and Mansell, Prost took the lead on lap 34. Caffi followed in second place. Gerhard Berger , who benefited from the failure of both Brabham pilots, was in third place at this point. After a pit stop, Caffi collided with his own team-mate Andrea de Cesaris when he tried to lap it and retired.

Since Berger also fell back from the 50th lap and was finally eliminated, Riccardo Patrese took second place behind Alain Prost. Eddie Cheever finished his home race in third ahead of Christian Danner , who started from last place and achieved the best result of his Formula 1 career in fourth. This was followed by Johnny Herbert and Thierry Boutsen in fifth and sixth respectively. None of the other pilots reached the destination.
