Helden - When your country needs you is a German disaster film from 2013. The film premiered on October 3, 2013 in prime time on RTL .

One day a communications satellite hits the Reichstag building . The federal government is still assuming a terrorist attack when planes crash from the sky and all communication breaks down. Germany and the rest of the world are in a state of emergency . The young scientist Sophie Ritter immediately realized that an experiment at the Geneva research center had failed: the scientists there accidentally simulated a big bang with the so-called “God's machine”, the world's largest particle accelerator (based on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN ) creates a black hole , which now changes the earth's gravity . An electromagnetic pulse leads to a breakdown of infrastructure and the spontaneous formation of mountains and ditches all over Europe. Sophie had already warned about the risks of the machine in her dissertation , but nobody wanted to believe her at the time.
At the request of the Chancellor , Sophie sets out for Geneva to stop the experiment; together with her ex-boyfriend Marc Weber, who wants to save his sister Andrea and daughter Johanna, who are with a kindergarten group in the security area of the research center. In the Brandenburg amusement park Tropical Islands , they are desperately looking for the young hacker Tobias, whose laptop contains the shutdown codes for the particle accelerator. Since the data center in Geneva was destroyed by the accident, the particle accelerator can no longer be stopped from there. On their way they meet the former miner Willi and his wife Rosi, who are evacuating a threatened hospital into a disused tunnel.
Sophie and Marc get to the particle accelerator, where Sophie manages to upload the shutdown codes and shut down the machine. The nuclear missile fired by a military jet that is supposed to destroy it can then be diverted into Lake Geneva by the pilot and the warhead deactivated.

The film was made between August 13 and October 28, 2012 in North Rhine-Westphalia , Bavaria , Austria , Berlin and Lower Saxony .
The EUR 8 million production was financed with more than EUR 3.650 million from state German and Austrian film funding agencies. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW alone took over 1,500,000 euros of the production costs. The federal states of Bavaria ( FilmFernsehFonds Bayern ) and Berlin / Brandenburg ( Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg ) each contributed 500,000 euros . Another 300,000 euros flowed from the state of Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Württemberg media and film company ). The joint state film foundation of Bremen, Hamburg and Lower Saxony Nordmedia financed the RTL production with 100,000 euros. Austria took over 750,000 euros of the production costs through the state funding agency RTR Rundfunk- und Telekom Regulierung Fernsehfonds Austria . The state of Salzburg also supported the production with a financial grant of an unknown amount.
The film was released on DVD on October 4th, 2013.

The premiere on October 3, 2013 saw 3.83 million people on RTL, which results in an average market share of 13.1%. In the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year-olds, 1.96 million viewers saw the film, which corresponds to an above-average market share for RTL of 17.7%.
