Tropical Islands ( German : Tropical Islands ; abbreviated TI ) is a tropical amusement park in the communities of Halbe and Krausnick-Groß Wasserburg in the Brandenburg district of Dahme-Spreewald , Germany . It is located since 2004 in the completed in 2000 Cargo lifter hangar , which as the largest cantilevered applies hall in the world.

Use, location

In 2019 Tropical Islands had around 1.3 million visitors. Around 550 people are permanently employed at Tropical Islands, with temporary workers. Tropical Islands has been operated by Parques Reunidos from Spain since January 2019 . The first owner and operator was a Malaysian group of companies.

The maximum capacity utilization in the company is 6,000 visitors per day. The hall is approved for up to 8,200 visitors.

Tropical Islands, about 60 kilometers south of the center and about 50 kilometers south of the city limits of Berlin , is located in the communities of Halbe and Krausnick-Groß Wasserburg , near the A13 motorway. The amusement park is located on the former Soviet airfield Brand . After the concept of the Cargolifter failed, a new use of the huge self-supporting hall was sought. The Malaysian company Tanjong finally had the idea of redesigning it into a leisure facility with a tropical flair.

History, description, concept

On June 11, 2003, the Tanjong Group acquired the no longer used Cargolifter hangar for 17.5 million euros, of which 10 million came as a subsidy from the state of Brandenburg. The building permit for the design was granted on February 2, 2004 and the opening as Tropical Islands on December 19, 2004.

Due to its originally planned purpose, the sheltered accommodation of large airships, this hall is the largest self-supporting hall in the world. It is 360 meters long, 210 meters wide, 107 meters high and has a volume of 5.5 million cubic meters. Its original construction costs as an airship hangar were around 78 million euros.

Several pools, bars and restaurants are available in a "tropical" environment with a temperature of 26 ° C with around 40-60% humidity and the largest indoor rainforest in the world with a beach and numerous tropical plants.

The basic admission price has to be chosen at the entrance, all other expenses inside are saved on a chip armband with credit function. The entire facility is divided into a sauna landscape and a tropical adventure landscape with their own entrance fee. A change is associated with a one-time surcharge per day. Surcharges are also necessary for other parts, for example for the mini golf course or the internal overnight accommodation. The entertainment program includes a children's program, various events and small live concerts.

Tropical Islands is open 24 hours a day all year round except for December 24th. Initially, it was possible to stay in Tropical Islands for any length of time. For overnight stays in Tropical Islands a surcharge was due at 3 a.m. if you had not booked a room or tent. Since the mid-2010s, a surcharge of 34.50 euros has been booked as a follow-up ticket at 1 a.m.

In December 2018 it was announced that the Tanjong Group would sell Tropical Islands to the Spanish company Parques Reunidos . The sale was completed in February 2019.

Design of subject areas

Different subject areas were established.

  • Bali lagoon , with 1,200 square meters of water and a water depth of sometimes less than one meter, water temperature 32 ° C, fountains, two waterfalls, flow channel, whirlpools and two slides.

  • Overnight accommodation: two rainforest camps with 138 tents as well as 197 rooms and lodges spread over the whole hall

expansion

In November and December 2006 Tropical Islands was expanded. A 4,000 square meter children's section was built. A wellness and sauna area with seven areas was completed in mid-2007 on 10,000 square meters. In the sauna there is a precious stone steam bath, a salt grotto, a stone sauna, a tree sauna, a herbal sweat lodge, an ice fountain, a mist grotto and the Palaneri sauna in the Australian style; there are also hot tubs and adventure showers. The saunas are adapted to the Southeast Asian setting and inspired by local buildings. The Indian Elephanta Temple and the temple complex of Angkor Wat are based on the original buildings. Tropical Islands thus has the largest tropical sauna landscape in Europe. The 27 meter high water slide tower with four slides, the children's play and tobacco world and the mini golf course complete the pool.

The subsequent conversion and extension cost, according to the company, 23 million euros. The original total for the investments was given as 75 million euros, of which the state of Brandenburg contributed 17 million euros from subsidies. The objective of the expansion funding was to keep the 501 jobs at Tropical Islands.

2008 a campsite with pitches and was in the immediate vicinity outside the hall Tipi -Zelten of cloth and a tent area built. New accommodation options have also been created in the hall. Since then, guests have had the opportunity to stay overnight in numerous lodges and rooms that are located directly in the tropical landscape. There are also two rainforest camps with fabric tents available to overnight guests . Since 2010, holiday homes right next to the hall have been supplementing the accommodation offer. A stay of several days at Tropical Islands is possible.

In May 2016, the new outdoor area Amazonia was opened with a size of 35,000 square meters. It includes two thermal baths with a water temperature of 31 ° C, a white water slide, a sports park and sunbathing areas. The heating of the outdoor pools allows year-round use.

By November 2017, Nature Homes were built near the campsite. A further expansion took place in 2018, the cost of the five-year expansion from 2,000 to 9,000 beds is around 300 million euros. A new game world for children, archery for guests of all ages and a petting zoo have also been added.

The Spanish owner, who operates 64 amusement parks worldwide, will build another 100 new holiday homes outdoors by 2020. At the same time, the outer shell of the large hall will be renewed while operations continue; it is estimated that it will take around six years to complete.

economics

For a cost-covering operation, 1.25 million visitors per year were calculated. The target group for the expansion of the leisure facility were and are visitors from more distant regions, including Poland. In the first year of operation, 2.5 million visitors were expected, which was not enough with one million. In 2005 the tropical resort made a loss between 10 and 20 million euros. The initially low number of visitors was attributed to various reasons, including the comparatively remote location.

A changed price structure and newly created overnight accommodations have improved visitor acceptance. While only 512,000 visitors came in 2007, the annual number of visitors increased to 883,000 in 2010. In the same period, sales rose from EUR 13.8 million to EUR 32 million in 2010. In 2009, a profit was achieved for the first time in its history . The occupancy rate of the 2,000 guest beds in 2017 was 85 percent.

In the initial phase there were problems with the plants that received no daylight under the light-proof dome. Since the replacement of the entire south side of the hall along the “Südsee” beach with a 20,000 square meter ETFE (a UV-permeable special film) in October 2005, daylight can now enter unhindered through this “window”.

Thermography recording

The building envelope is designed for an internal temperature of 19 ° C, while the hall is heated to 26 ° C for the bathroom. The outer surface and the UV-translucent film cover cause heat losses. The thermographic recording shows the heat loss at various points in the hall. Heat losses also arise from the permanent heating of the sand. In addition, there are energy losses, since water vapor from the water basin is carried away with the exhaust air from the hall. This requires a heating output of 1.3  megawatts .

safety

A special feature of the Tropical Islands is the plant fire brigade , which is available for first aid, fire fighting and fire protection. The guard is manned 24 hours a day in a 3-shift system. A fire service quad and an ambulance quad are used for rapid movement in the large hall. The actual guard is located outside the hall and also includes a portable pump vehicle with a water tank (TSF-W) and a tank fire engine (TLF 24/50).
