Reports
background
Gabriele Tarquini was signed by AGS as the successor to Philippe Streiff , who had to end his Formula 1 career after a serious accident.
Tyrrell brought two copies of the new car with the designation 018 to the starting line after last year's vehicles had been used at the season opener in Brazil .
training
The first row, known from numerous racing weekends last year , consisting of the two McLaren from Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost , also emerged after the second qualifying practice in Imola. The second row was formed by Nigel Mansell in a Ferrari and Riccardo Patrese in a Williams . They were followed by their two team mates Gerhard Berger and Thierry Boutsen .
Since the first regular qualification training took place on Friday in damp track conditions, the drivers qualified with their lap times achieved on Saturday. Some of the pre-qualifiers had already been faster on Friday morning with average speeds of more than 200 km / h than some of the pilots admitted to regular timed practice without pre-qualification. Stefano Modena , for example, was one of only five drivers who achieved a lap time of under 1:28 minutes this weekend.
run
Senna initially took the lead ahead of Prost, Mansell, Patrese and Berger. In the fourth lap, the Austrian's Ferrari 640 shot straight ahead in the then very fast Tamburello curve, hit the lane, was thrown back around 100 meters and went up in flames. The well-equipped marshals reacted very quickly. The fire was extinguished within around 20 seconds. Berger survived the accident with a broken rib and multiple burns. The race was canceled.
At the restart Prost was able to take the lead, but was overtaken by Senna on the first lap in the Tosa curve. The Brazilian thus opposed an agreement that the two teammates had made in the run-up to the race. This is seen as the beginning of a dispute between the two that subsequently lasted for several years.
Alessandro Nannini finished third behind the two McLaren drivers after Mansell and Patrese were eliminated at the end of the first third of the race due to technical problems. As Nelson Piquet had to give up after half the distance, Thierry Boutsen came fourth ahead of Derek Warwick and Jonathan Palmer .
Boutsen was initially disqualified after the race due to an alleged rule violation at the restart, but got his placement back after a successful protest by the Williams team. In contrast, Olivier Grouillard was disqualified after mechanics had illegally worked on his ligier before the restart.
