Reports

background

The same drivers who had already contested the season opener in Brazil competed for the second World Cup round of the year .

The teams AGS , Osella and Scuderia Italia each brought a new vehicle to the start.

training

Nicola Larini (Osella) was excluded from the race weekend because of a non-compliant vehicle. Since exactly 30 pilots took part in the training, a pre-qualification was not necessary.

The battle for pole position was a duel between the two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost , which the Brazilian won with a lap time that was around eight tenths of a second shorter. The time gap to third-placed Nelson Piquet was already around 3.3 seconds. Alessandro Nannini qualified for fourth place on the grid ahead of Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese , who formed the third row.

run

Michele Alboreto had to start from the pit lane after his engine did not start in time for the start of the warm-up lap.

While Prost's engine was almost in danger of going out at the start, Senna got off to a perfect start. He then kept the lead until the finish.

Prost, who initially fell back to sixth place behind Piquet, Patrese, Nannini and Berger, fought his way back up to second place by the eighth lap. The McLaren drivers achieved an undisputed double victory. Nelson Piquet came third. Thierry Boutsen came fourth ahead of Gerhard Berger and Alessandro Nannini.
