report
background
During the race, new flags with phosphorescent material were used, which should make the flags more clearly recognizable for the pilots. The race in San Marino was the tenth race for the engine manufacturer Supertec and the 100th race for the Sauber racing team. For Luca Badoer , who is back at the start after his hand injury, this race is the 35th participation in the race without scoring a world championship point, breaking Brett Lunger's previous record .
Ricardo Zonta , who had badly injured his foot at the previous race weekend , was replaced this race weekend by Mika Salo .
training
Friday training
As in the two previous race weekends, the McLarens with Häkkinen took the first two places ahead of Coulthard. Häkkinen set the best time with 1: 28.467, about half a second behind Irvine follows in third place, while Michael Schumacher is already one second behind in fifth place. All drivers were placed within five seconds, the last Gené was two seconds behind the penultimate Takagi.
Saturday training
This time Coulthard set the fastest training time with a time of 1: 26.509, ahead of Häkkinen, Michael Schumacher and Irvine. Gené was able to improve and was in the penultimate place in the end, a second ahead of his team-mate and the last-placed Badoer. All drivers were placed within five seconds.
Qualifying
McLaren occupied the front row for the third time in a row, with Häkkinen beating Coulthard by almost two hundredths with a time of 1: 26.362. Behind them are the Ferraris with Michael Schumacher, who had to admit defeat by around 17 hundredths, and Eddie Irvine. Both Benettons had problems during qualifying and could only achieve 16th and 17th place, with Fisichella 15 thousandths ahead of Wurz. All drivers were placed within four and a half seconds.
Warm-up
The warm-up for the race in San Marino was the first official meeting in the 1999 Formula 1 season when McLaren did not take the first two places. Coulthard set the fastest time with 1: 28.642 ahead of Irvine, Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher. All drivers were placed within four seconds.
run
Häkkinen drove an abnormally quick warm-up lap to test his brakes. Only in the last corners did the Finn slow down a lot so that the field could be pushed together again.
At the start, Häkkinen was able to maintain the lead ahead of Coulthard, Michael Schumacher, Irvine and Frentzen. Villeneuve initially stopped at the start and was able to start the car briefly until the engine stopped again. The marshals pushed the BAR car into the box, where the mechanics were allowed to work on the car again. Several drivers, including Wurz, had to dodge over the grass in front of the stationary Villeneuve at the last moment. Alesi and Fisichella were both able to make up four places after the start and were ninth and twelve. After the first lap, Häkkinen was leading ahead of Coulthard, Michael Schumacher, Irvine, Barrichello and Frentzen. The leader Häkkinen now began to break away from the rest of the field and consistently set fastest lap times. On lap five, de la Rosa spun in turn seven and hit the left rear wheel of Wurz, who was unable to continue the race with a broken rear suspension. De la Rosa also had to give up subsequently.
On lap 17, Häkkinen carelessly made a driving error in the last corner and damaged his car beyond repair. At that point, Häkkinen was 13 seconds ahead. Michael Schumacher made his first of two planned stops on lap 31, while Coulthard made his only pit stop on lap 35. After his stop, Coulthard fell behind Schumacher and a couple of lapped cars, which subsequently prevented him from making fast lap times. This situation enabled Schumacher to stay in front of Coulthard even after his second pit stop and to win the race to the delight of the Tifosi who had traveled . Barrichello in third completed the podium one lap behind. The winner's trophy was presented to Michael Schumacher by Claudio Podeschi , the tourism minister of San Marinese , and the trophy for the victorious designer Ferrari was accepted by team boss Jean Todt .
After the race
When asked by a German television team how Häkkinen's accident came about, McLaren-Mercedes Motorsport Director Norbert Haug only answered dryly:
“He drove into the pit wall. In technical jargon one says 'he has run out of talent'. "
