Mika Häkkinen took first place ahead of Michael Schumacher and Heinz-Harald Frentzen .
report
background
Luca Badoer injured his hand in a training accident and was unable to take part in the race weekend. As a replacement, Prost's French test driver , Stéphane Sarrazin , was loaned for a race. It was Sarrazin's first and only outing at a racing weekend in Formula 1.
training
Friday training
Similar to the previous race weekend, the McLarens dominated the training, Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time with 1: 18.881 ahead of his team mate David Coulthar, Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine. With the exception of Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve, who both had problems with their cars, all drivers were within three and a half seconds.
Saturday training
Ricardo Zonta caused an interruption of the training session due to his serious accident. Zonta flew off the track at turn six and hit the side of the guardrails. He seriously injured his left foot and was unable to take part in qualifying.
David Coulthard was able to secure the best time with 1: 17.035 ahead of Häkkinen and Frentzen. Michael Schumacher finished fifth, around a second behind. All drivers were placed within four seconds.
Qualifying
As in Australia, the front row of the grid goes to McLaren with Häkkinen ahead of Coulthard. This is followed by Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Fisichella and Irvine. Villeneuve, who qualified for 16th place, had to start from the end of the field because he was using illegal fuel and so his time was canceled. All drivers were placed within four seconds.
Warm-up
For the third time in a row, McLaren dominated an official session with Häkkinen by four hundredths ahead of Coulthard with a time of 1: 17.709, Michael Schumacher was third with half a second. All drivers were placed within three and a half seconds.
run
Coulthard's car died at the start, but the race continued. With an early hand signal, every driver behind was able to evade in time. The car was then pushed into the pits, where the engine was successfully started four laps after the race was approved.
Local hero Barrichello also took the lead on lap four, as Häkkinen was temporarily unable to select any more gears. After Michael Schumacher also passed the Finn, Häkkinen was able to change gears normally again. Barrichello was able to maintain the lead until lap 27 when the Brazilian pitted for his first of two planned stops. On lap ten there was an accident between Wurz and Hill, whereupon the latter had to give up. On lap 31, Sarrazin flew violently after turn 14 due to wing damage, hit the boundary wall and turned several times and finally rolled to the opposite edge of the track.
Michael Schumacher, in the lead, went into the pit lane on lap 38 for his only stop. Häkkinen thus took the lead and was now driving much faster than behind the Ferrari driver. Together with the fast laps and the flawless work of the McLaren pit team, Häkkinen was able to keep the lead after his stop on lap 42, ahead of Schumacher and Frentzen, so the leading trio also finished the race. It is worth mentioning that Frentzen ran out of fuel on the last lap, but was still able to keep third place, since fourth-placed Ralf Schumacher has already been lapped. The winner's trophy was presented by Viviane Senna da Silva Lalli , Ayrton Senna's eldest sister and board member of the Instituto Ayrton Senna . The trophy for the successful designer McLaren was presented by Marc de Petter as the official representative of the main sponsor Philip Morris .
